One day of your time is all it takes

As time is of the essence and release for training often difficult, the good news is you can now avail yourself of short, sharp training and assessment for your workforce with the recently introduced Mandatory Skills Card. This is available exclusively through BICSc, the lead education body for the cleaning industry. The scheme works quite simply – each candidate is trained in

the three most important and often neglected aspects of the cleaning services: lChemical competence lSafe use and care lSafe storage This option may also be used as part of an induction

programme, demonstrating rapid connection to best practice values whilst embedding environmental awareness. Organisations have a further opportunity to select skills which

are directly relevant to their business needs from the Cleaning Professionals Skills suite at a later date if required. Environmental Excellence Training and Development Ltd in

conjunction with SYR are pleased to advise that attendance on the Mandatory Skills Card programme is one day, followed by an appointment for assessment which may be between 1-2 hours

Detergents a clear winner in Tomorrow’s Cleaning Awards

SYR’s Clear Solution range of detergents has been named a winner in the Tomorrow’s Cleaning Awards 2012. Developed to work in conjunction with the company’s Ultimate

range of combos, mopheads and tools, they give cost-effective clean- ing on a variety of dirty surfaces. They save you money thanks to the portion control pod which means

you only use exactly what you need, while the water is kept clean so needs changing less often. SYR is confident you will also find Clear Solution detergents are a

winner. Research raises questions

New research has cast doubt on the belief that C. difficile is spread in hospitals through contact with infected patients. A major study published in the journal Public Library of Science: Medicine reports that two-thirds of new cases were not linked to any cases of patients known to be in- fected. Less than a quarter of newly infected patients had

the same type as an infected patient on their ward. The researchers say they

cannot therefore be sure the infection can be controlled using current strategies, which are based on prevent- ing person-to-person spread. However infection control methods should continue to be used as they are largely effective in many infections.

Underground train-ing pays off

SYR’s dedicated team will go wherever it takes at whatever time is necessary to bring customers the best service. And if that means being down in a tube station at midnight, as the old Jam song says, that’s where you’ll find them. Actually it was at 1am, following a full day’s work, that key account manager Paul Rudolph and Taskforce member Dawn Inchley found themselves at London Underground’s Wembley Park

station. They were there to demonstrate the new Ultimate Combo, Rapid Mop and Spraygee – which for obvious reasons had to be done when the station was closed. To be allowed to demonstrate the prod- ucts, Paul and Dawn had had to attend a day-long training course to gain the ‘LU Access Card’. This is essential for any- one wanting to be allowed on to the underground to work, exhibit or indeed

do anything beyond simply getting on and off a tube train!

Issues covered included health and

safety, fire fighting and contact with as- bestos. The qualification is valid for two years. Having the access card will allow SYR the opportunity to work closer with cleaning companies, especially ISS, to demonstrate its innovative cleaning products within the total network of London Underground.

Ken and Jenny Harvey are planning for a happy retirement.

Ken hands over reins

After more than 40 years in the business, SYR loyalty distributor Ken Harvey of A1 Services, Camberley, has retired. Ken began his working life in hotels in Jersey before returning

to the UK and a stint at the legendary Circus Tavern, known as the Palladium of Essex. In 1968 he opened a shop in Surrey selling second hand wash-

ing machines and fridges. Two years later he started a contract cleaning company, A1 Cleaning Services South, and by 1980 had more than 200 cleaners working for him. Major contracts included Heathrow Airport and Royal Ascot, which led to his love of horse racing. In 1984 Jenny joined the company and by 1986 they were a couple. Ken sold the contract cleaning company in 1986 but as part of

the deal stayed on until 1989. He then opened a shop in Camberley selling black bags to the trade and that neatly progressed to selling more janitorial products. In 1994 he opened a warehouse with trade counter before moving to new premises on the A30 London to Land’s End road in Camberley. He opened a second shop in Bagshot in 2006. Ken was approached by the Mardell family who wanted to take

over the business and they will continue to run it as a family business and as a loyalty distributor to SYR. One of Ken’s first plans for his retirement is a return visit to

Jersey as he has not been back since working there. SYR’s distributor sales director John Cook said: “I first met Ken

and Jenny in 1994 in Camberley. A1 has always been a loyal customer of SYR; in fact when SYR launched the loyalty programme back in 2008 Ken and Jenny visited SYR and became our first customers to join the loyalty scheme. “On behalf of the chairman and everyone at SYR we wish Ken and Jenny all the very best on their retirement.”
