Online advertising reaches record high
Internet advertising leapt by 14.4% in 2011, to reach £4.8billion - a £687million rise on the previous year, according to the report from the Internet Advertising Bureau UK (IAB), conducted by PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC).
This is the biggest increase in internet advertising in five years.
Video advertising also saw a particularly strong growth; now accounting for 10% of all online display advertising. Expenditure on online video doubled to £109million in 2011, up from £54million in 2010.
The report also suggests that social networking is another steady riser, with a 75% increase in banner ads on platforms such as Facebook,
YouTube and LinkedIn. Social networks accounted for 27% of all the time spent online in the UK in 2011.
Advertising on mobile devices also leapt last year, by 157% to reach a new high of £203million.
This increase was driven by the increased popularity of smartphones and tablets, such as the iPhone and iPad, along with new touchscreen technology and 3G enabled devices.
Tim Elkington, Director of Research and Strategy at the IAB, said: "Online and mobile advertising have experienced staggering growth since this study began in 1997.
"Advertisers increasingly recognise the central role that online plays in their marketing campaigns."
Anna Bartz, Strategy Manager at PwC, said: “This year’s results reflect the continued appeal of digital media – on desktop, mobile or tablet – to advertisers for both brand advertising and direct response. All formats grew, with strongest increases in video and social media, and in search. Internet adspend's 14.4% growth is exceptional when compared to an estimated advertising growth of less than 2% across all media in 2011.”

Tennant Company granted interim injunction against Kärcher's false statements
Tennant Company (NYSE: TNC), a world leader in designing, manufacturing and marketing of solutions that help create a cleaner, safer, healthier world, today announced that the Regional Court in Cologne, Germany, has granted Tennant an interim injunction against Alfred Kärcher GmbH & Co. KG. The court’s decision, effective immediately, means that Kärcher is no longer allowed to state that Tennant has weakened its ec-H2O™ advertising claims, and Kärcher must immediately remove all such statements from the Internet. If future violations to the court’s
decision occur, Kärcher could be forced to pay a fine of up to €250,000 EUR (approximately $327,000 USD) to the German state.
Tennant sought and was granted the injunction after Kärcher refused Tennant’s request to cease and desist in spreading false information about Tennant’s ec-H2O advertising.
Commented Chris Killingstad, Tennant Company's president and chief executive officer: “We are pleased with the court’s actions to halt the spread of disparaging statements by a competitor. We stand behind our ec-H2O technology and the many benefits
