improving the quality of life for the people in central Oklahoma. We do this by not only providing affordable electric service to our members, but also by our active involvement in a number of important community support programs. One of the most successful community efforts in which we’re involved is

the Operation Round Up® program. Founded in 1989 by a co-op in South Carolina, Palmetto Electric

Cooperative (PEC), and adopted by OEC in 1993, Operation Round Up is an incredibly successful way in which we have helped community members who have fallen on hard times. Through Operation Round Up, participating members ‘round up’ their monthly electric bills. (For example, a bill of $67.43 would be automatically rounded up to $68.00, with the additional 57 cents going to the Operation Round Up fund.) The money is pooled with that from other co-op members, and then allocated to a variety of worthy causes throughout the co-op’s seven-county service area. Participating members each donate roughly $6 annually to the fund (don’t forget it’s tax-deductible). Nearly 85 percent of OEC members currently participate in Operation

Just as each co- op’s governing board is independent, each of these programs has a unique set of bylaws and operating practices. At press time, the OEC Foundation board—10 community volunteers

entrusted with the responsibility of awarding Operation Round Up grants— was prepared to meet to consider funding requests. Look next month for a recap of the April 26 meeting.
