TRAINING THE CUSTOMERS TO BE GREEN DRIVERS

To promote environmental awareness, First Capital Connect (FCC) has launched a car park tariff discount scheme for customers driving environmentally friendly vehicles. The scheme offers a 10 per cent discount for customers when they purchase a season ticket via RingGo, FCC’s mobile payment system. The discount is available to all vehicles registered as low-emission and in Band A, B or C with the DVLA. David Burns, customer services

commercial manager for First Capital Connect, said: ‘First Capital Connect is dedicated to improving the environment and we seek to use resources to the best of our ability. Carbon-metered parking benefits the environment in so many ways – not just from the company point of view, by reducing resource requirements and promoting a move to electronic payments – but also by encouraging motorists to think about the type of vehicle they drive.’

Canalside car park at Brindleyplace for the next 50 years. The 903-space, multi-storey car park at Brindleyplace, in the heart of Birmingham’s convention quarter, will enjoy a host of upgrades during the next two years, including better signage and lighting and upgraded parking equipment. To ensure

a good level of security, there will be 24/7 patrols and 54 closed- circuit cameras. The car park is in an important visitor centre in Birmingham with customers using the hotels, restaurants, bars, Conference Centre, Symphony Hall, Sea Life Centre, gym, gallery and National Indoor Arena, which are all situated nearby. The site will also have electric car charging points, waste recycling stations, free buggy and umbrella hire, and a jump starter and heart defibrillator in case of emergencies.

Shoppers in the Scottish town of Greenock have really embraced mobile phone payment for parking. In just two years, the introduction of Bemrose Booth’s Pay and Phone system has been hailed a ‘huge success’ by customers.

Most notable methods of transaction are through the smart phone app,

particularly iPhone. Motorists enter the location code of the shopping centre car park, select the amount of time they wish to park for and the parking session will begin. Other features of the app that shoppers have been availing themselves of are the ‘find my vehicle’ button, which navigates the

user to their vehicle, and the ‘history’ button, which displays previous parking records. Robert Adamson, a spokesperson for Pay and Phone said: ‘These payments significantly minimise the car parks carbon footprint by reduced ticket printing. Thousands have downloaded the app.’
