SAFER PARKING SCHEME

NEWS

NORTHAMPTON’S FIRST ELEVEN

PARK MARK FOR LEISURE PARK

Customers at a Leicester leisure facility can be happy in the knowledge their vehicles will be safe after the centre’s car park was granted Park Mark status.

The city centre facility, Meridian Leisure Park, has a dedicated security team who monitor CCTV cameras 24-hours-a-day and regularly patrol the car park. The layout of the car park does not give any easy cover to thieves. The police assessor said: ‘Crime levels at the Leisure Exchange car park, and others in the town, are very low and our aim is to replicate this across the city.

‘For visitors to the Meridian Leisure Park, the Park Mark award adds real value as it is important for customer confidence to know that car crime at the venue is low.’

The car park is managed by DTZ on behalf of owners The Leisure Fund Ltd Partnership, part of Legal & General.

CRIME FIGHTERS IN THE WEST

North Somerset Council is fighting crime in car parks through the implementation of the Safer Parking Scheme. Five new facilities recently joined the ranks holding Park Mark status. Elfan Ap Rees, North Somerset Council’s deputy leader, said: ‘These awards show the car park users that we are committed to creating high-quality parking facilities that feel safe and have measures in place to reduce levels of crime.’

With more than one million users a year, the County Mall Shopping Centre car park in Crawley is a popular destination for shoppers in West Sussex. BPA development manager Mike Bibby said the complete lack of crime in the car park, despite a large throughput, was a credit to the parking managment team. The shopping centre car park has been re-issued with its Park Mark

award after a visit by Bibby and Phillip Edwards, the Sussex Police accredited assessor.

Bibby said: ‘I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate all personnel involved for maintaining the standards witnessed when we completed the re-assessments recently. The lack of any issues reflects on how well this facility is creating a safe and non-threatening environment for shoppers.’

Parking is playing its part in encouraging shoppers to Northampton town centre. The Borough Council is considering offering free or reduced parking charges, as well as ensuring the safety of its car parks through engagement with the Safer Parking Scheme.

Northampton Borough Council holds 11 Park Mark awards, more than any other car park operator in Northamptonshire.

Councillor Tim Hadland, cabinet member for regeneration, enterprise and planning, said: ‘We have been working hard to reduce charges and offer free parking to make a visit to Northampton more attractive to shoppers.’

Ian Carmichael, the SPS development manager, said, ‘The council’s determination to provide safe parking facilities for its residents and visitors is worth making a song and dance about.’
