SKILLS FOR SUCCESS
Parking manager Michelle Green says having the right skillset is more important than gaining numerous qualifications
qualification. And just because someone holds a qualification, it does not mean they can competently carry out the role. But that is a different discussion for another time! I believe the new qualifications bring a sense of professionalism to the parking industry as a whole, while for the individual it gives a sense of confidence and the chance of a career path. Previously the qualifications were very patchy and many parts of the role had to be covered by generic courses. It is important to have a supporting framework of qualifications to promote the professional role of the sector, particularly when you consider the public’s perception of the parking profession as a whole. Many other bodies have formal qualifications that are often judged as a professional standard. Now our sector has a suite of qualifications, it can promote itself as an area that is good to work in and that has career opportunities. It may even help to attract different age ranges to the sector and help local government become a more appealing place to work. Working with Asset Skills and City & Guilds is a great opportunity to help gain some funding and get an understanding of how these qualifications are set up and the way they are put together. I have worked on a new qualification with City & Guilds and it is important the awarding bodies speak with the BPA and professionals that have the knowledge and experience. Combining parking management units with the Institute of Leadership and Management (ILM) awards complements the generic training and gives staff the option to take higher level qualifications that are still relevant to parking over a longer timeframe. This helps when employers give staff time from work to go and take the qualifications, and for the staff to fit it all into their lives.

am a firm believer in the fact that you need staff with the right skills set to carry out a role, not necessarily simply the
civil enforcement officers hold the Level 2 City & Guilds qualification for enforcement officers and I take pride in letting the public and other staff members know all about this. Some of the processing team have undertaken the Level 3 City & Guilds Notice Processing Qualification. This has given members of the team a boost in confidence. It also means that, in the future, there will be more opportunities to take further qualifications in management and leadership. One very big benefit relates to public perception, we can broadcast the fact that our staff are qualified to a recognised standard and are professionals. For new staff it helps them to gain confidence, especially if the development is combined with a good mentoring system.
There is still work to be done to ensure the qualifications are worth taking and mean individuals have worked to gain them, but this is underway and I am confident the future is bright and this will be achieved.
