The BPA’s head of professional development, Rocky Datoo, introduces this month’s Skills for Success, looking at the work of the Learning & Development Network and its impact upon the parking profession

s Patrick Troy highlights on p3, making parking a recognised profession is an intricate objective
that intertwines all of the BPA’s work streams. The Skills and IPP Board, City & Guilds, Asset Skills and the Learning & Development (L&D) Network all work together to make parking qualifications and related professional development available to those working in the sector to advance this objective. The L&D Network – for learning and development professionals working in the parking sector – is primarily an online community supported by targeted e-zines and a LinkedIn group. However, when appropriate and the agenda dictates, the BPA hosts an event to allow members to hear from and share ideas with key partners. The most recent event was held in February when representatives from Asset Skills and City &

THE L&D NETWORK: AND ITS FUNCTION
The L&D Network is for learning and development professionals working within the parking sector and was set up in 2008 to: 1. Help create a learning culture across the parking sector that benefits all in allowing the progress and up-skilling of employees

while focusing on improved organisational efficiency. 2. Enable those in the parking sector involved in learning and development to share good practice, knowledge and experience. 3. Provide continuous professional development (CPD) opportunities for those
involved in learning and development. 4. Strengthen the voice of skills, qualifications, learning and development issues when liaising with external bodies. 5. Advance the skills and professional development agenda of the BPA.
Guilds attended to discuss the UK Academy for Parking and the newly extended suite of parking qualifications that now additionally covers those working in private parking enforcement, the Road Traffic Regulations Act 1984, CCTV enforcement and parking management and leadership. With the new chapter that these qualifications and the UK Academy for Parking opens, this month’s Skills for Success celebrates the L&D Network’s progress in professionalising the sector.
