discussed the multi-layer insert moulding technology the machine maker has developed together with Swiss mouldmaker Glaroform to allow a foil layer to be placed into the part during the moulding cycle. the process involves shaping a preform from a die-
cut blank of aluminium foil, which is then placed into the mould cavity by a high speed handling unit and over- moulded on the outside with Pe or PP. the semi- finished part is then turned and transferrred to a second cavity by the same automation unit, where the internal surface is moulded in Pe or PP prior to ejection of the finished item. Both the internal and external surfaces are injected through the fixed side of the mould tool.
Canned alternatives the project partners see the system offering an alternative option for foods currently packaged in metal cans, which offer shelf lifetimes of up to six years. Attractions of the system include the complete isolation of the metal barrier material from the contents of the package, so unlike cans there is no need for a protective lacquer. it is also possible to combine the system with iMl to produce a fully decorated part in one production step. while the process is more complex than a traditional
iMl production system, netstal is confident it could be cost effective with metal cans. Based on an eight-cavity stack mould configuration, Grings said the project partners estimates the new technology would come in at around 62% of the cost of cans. norwegian research organisation norner innovation
provided details of a project it has carried out with packaging producer Superfos to evaluate future potential for polypropylene carbonate (PPc) polymer as a packaging material. PPc is a copolymer formed by the
polymerisation of co2 and propylene oxide, both of which can be obtained from sustainable sources (in the
case of co2 offering a carbon capture option). norner innovation market development manager
Morten Augestad said blends of 50% PP and 50% Pcc (containing 43% by weight of co2) have been found to

calculator, a free on-line tool that it launched last year. the simulation model estimates the otr of packages produced using one or a combination of polymers, such as Pe, PP, Pet, PA and eVoH. it allows the user to define the geometry of the container or package and the material structure. it can support a wide range of packaging options, including injection moulded multi- layer and iMl packages.
