countries, with India, Taiwan, Pakistan, Indonesia, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Iran, US, the Philippines and Brazil topping the list in terms of numbers. Shanghai is certainly a good location for the
event. Chinese economic statistics show the East China region – which Shanghai is at the centre of - produced 24.7m tonnes of finished plastics products in 2010, accounting for 42% of the country’s total domestic output. The city of Shanghai is home to a large number of automo- tive companies and many plastics processing operations. Official data shows the city’s produc- tion of plastics products alone totalled 2.0m tonnes

most of the world’s major machinery makers, attracted to a market that imported around E2.1bn worth of plastics and rubber machinery in 2010, according to estimates by the German machinery association VDMA. Its data shows Germany was the leading exporter of plastics and rubber machinery to China in 2010 with a share worth E587m, just ahead of Japan’s E578m. Taiwan holds the third biggest share of Chinese machinery imports at E248m, says the association. While the Chinese economy was not impacted by the

global recession as badly as the more developed economies of North America and Europe, it did see some slowing. It now appears to have recovered and the country’s plastics processing companies are investing again, according to the VDMA. It says Germany’s exports of plastics and rubber machinery to China were up by 30.5% in 2011 to reach a new record level of E766m. The previous best year was 2004, when Germany’s equip- ment makers posted Chinese sales of E593m. Arburg’s display at Chinaplas is aimed at the
country’s technical moulding sector. Its three machine display includes a first showing in China of its Edrive all-electric machine, which is designed for processors looking for an energy efficient machine for technical moulding applications. The company claims energy savings of up to 50% compared to
standard hydraulic models. The German machinery maker will
also demonstrate a 200 tonne Allrounder 570H hybrid machine
configured for in-mould labelled production of a cup in PS on a four cavity mould from Swiss mouldmaker Glaroform with automation from Beck Automation of Germany. Cycle time for the 10.1g parts is around three seconds. The company’s third exhibit shows production of TFT light guides on a 250 tonne Allrounder S using high speed injection compression. The 0.5mm thick parts feature a 350:1 length to thickness ratio and are moulded on a 15s cycle in a two cavity mould built by Heiju Technology. Mould filling is achieved in 50ms. BASF will present its latest UV absorber – Tinuvin 1600. The company says the new additive is designed for protection of thin layer thermoplastics parts such as multi-wall glazing and display films as well as automo- tive glazing parts. The company will also show the all plastic wheel that it developed for the Smart forVision concept car. The part is injection moulded in the company’s long fibre reinforced Ultramid Structure LF polyamide.
US-based Conair will show its latest polymer drying
technology, including its EnergySmart single stage ES-1 system, which it says is well suited to handling PET and high drying temperature engineering resins. The system is capable of handling throughputs of between 182 and 2,273 kg/h and incorporates the company’s automatic Drying Monitor technology to minimise energy consumption. The company will also show its SlimLine range of
compressed air dryers for throughputs of up to 22.5 kg/h, ResinWorks central drying and conveying system, and TrueWeigh extrusion control products. Austrian machine maker Engel – which has just
doubled the size of its large machine manufacturing plant at Shanghai to provide a capacity of 200 Duo machines a year – will be running three machines at the show, headed up by a Duo 5550/700 Pico model with energy saving servo-hydraulic drive and Viper 40 robot running an automotive application. The machine will be equipped with the company’s Flomo cooling water
