BPA COUNCIL A day in

I am fortunate that in my life on the road as a business development director for Equita I get to meet a vast range of people. Most of these are from local authorities, but I also meet people from a diverse range of businesses, which gives me a great overall picture of what is happening in the world of parking.

The best shop window for sourcing information is, of course, the BPA regional meetings, which are typically held three or four times a year, per region. It is amazing how you can get a feel for what people are thinking via a natter over a cup of coffee. It is in this setting that a whole range of subjects get aired. The core of this article is an account of a day spent at a BPA council meeting, as I feel that the inner workings of the organisation are often misunderstood or misinterpreted. All the council members are voted on by the BPA members at the AGM, and are there to represent the membership and to ratify the day-to-day workings of the organisation.

It should be said at this stage that council members are not in any way gagged against free speech. In fact, they are encouraged to raise issues in the appropriate forum so these can be properly heard and subsequently be open for debate.

Another thing that is often overlooked is the great commitment that commercial employers give to council candidates. For example, Equita, always a great champion of the BPA and its activities, has supported me throughout my tenure, given me employed time to carry out council duties and subsidised my costs in doing so. In these austere times, it really shows commitment by employers to the cause. This diarised snapshot of a day at a council meeting is a typical sequence and not intended to represent the views of the BPA or other council members. In summary, it may seem rather dull to write an article about a meeting but I feel it is important for members to know that the council
