SAFER PARKING SCHEME
IN BRIEF
SHROPSHIRE SUCCESS The Borough of Telford and Wrekin is celebrating after 25 of its 29 car parking facilities were re-awarded Park Mark status. Work is already planned to bring the remaining sites up to the standards required.
SWANNING IT The Swan shopping centre in Leatherhead, which has a five-level multi-storey car park, has successfully retained its Park Mark status, despite the age of the building and its increasing maintenance costs. The assessors reported that the standard of management in the car park is high, with good security, regular patrols, electronic surveillance and good lighting. Between November 2010 and December 2011, 374,000 vehicles used the facilities, and in that time only one related crime was recorded.
NEW PARKWAY AWARD
TOP MARKS FOR COUNCIL
South Gloucestershire Council has been awarded a Park Mark for the newly-opened Parkway North park- and-ride facility close to Bristol Parkway railway station. The facility has 200 spaces, including 10 disabled bays and dedicated motorcycle spaces.
TOP PRIZE IN NOTTINGHAM The car park at Gala Casino in Nottingham has won a Park Mark award. Both the lower casino car park, which features a lift taking guests straight into the casino, and the multi- storey car park, received the award.

Shropshire County Council has won a total of 26 Park Mark awards for its car park facilities. This includes three park-and-ride car parks in Shrewsbury.
Parking and transport officer for the council, Doug Hosking said: ‘Shropshire Council remains committed to ensuring our county car parks are safer places. The Park Mark Awards demonstrate that we are implementing the most effective measures possible to ensure car parks are safer and secure for the people who use them.
APRIL 2012
‘To have been given Park Mark Awards for our car parks is phenomenal. We strive to provide our customers with quality parking destinations around Shropshire, offering convenience and security, and these awards highlight that we are achieving this. It’s important for our customers to know they can park their car in a safer environment.’ SPS development manager Michael Gardner said: ‘I have been impressed by the enthusiastic approach of Doug Hosking and his team.’
SAFE SHOPPING
With a 55 per cent drop in crime and a rolling maintenance programme in place, Lakeside shopping centre in West Thurrock, Essex, is a worthy recipient of its Park Mark status. Following re-
assessments, the centre has once again successfully retained its Park Mark status for 15 parking facilities linked to the shopping centre. BPA development
manager, Mike Bibby, said: ‘The crime reduction means that the likelihood of
becoming a victim of crime for users of these facilities is one in 115,000 car visits, thus creating safe and non- threatening environments for users. ‘The management practices in place are of a high standard, with good electronic surveillance, together with regular patrols, in conjunction with Essex Police, who are permanently based at the centre. This has resulted in a close working partnership between them and the centre management.’

THREE RIVERS SWEET SEVENTEEN
Safer parking is now easy to find for drivers in Three Rivers, Hertfordshire as 17 local car parks – all run by Three Rivers Council from its head office in Rickmansworth – have Park Mark accreditation. The sites are in
Rickmansworth, Croxley Green, South Oxhey and Abbotts Langley.
Crime prevention design advisor Mike Sibley said: ‘While there are some simple ways we can help to keep our vehicles secure – locking doors and shutting windows securely, removing all valuables and keeping everything else out of sight – the award is a great way for members of the public to make informed decisions on
where to park their vehicle. ‘These car parks scored highly on management practices, regular visits by car park inspectors and cleanliness, so that users are confident their vehicles are being well looked after. We look forward to working with our partners to help them achieve similar status with car parks across the county.’
