etween seminars, visitors to the Parkex Theatre will be able to view the full length VoiceAbility video, which outlines some of the issues faced by disabled people when they use parking facilities. The video was created through collaboration between VoiceAbility and CPL, the publishers of Parking News. VoiceAbility is this year’s President’s Charity, chosen by BPA President, Paul Necus. As part of an awareness campaign, the organisation’s head of fundraising, Sarah Dowd-Crosby, was adamant that parking operators should be aware both of the issues facing disabled motorists, and ways in which VoiceAbility could help operators provide accessible facilities for all elements of the population. ‘We are able to offer a wide-range of training

options for people who work in the parking industry, so that they can be confident that their offering is accessible to as many people as possible. For example, signage is something that is a particular problem – a sizeable part of the population have very poor levels of literacy so we can show operators how to offer easy- read versions of parking notices.’ In the video, an employee of VoiceAbility who has a learning difficulty explains how he is sometimes confused by parking signs, and has received several parking tickets through a simple misunderstanding. The video also focuses on Christian, a severely handicapped man, and viewers will hear from his mother and his carers about the many difficulties they encounter just trying to help Christian do everyday things. In the film, as cars whizz round the corner of the car park, narrowly avoiding the parked vehicle in the disabled bay, viewers will see just how dangerous the simple task of getting out of a car in a car park can be, if you have a wheelchair to manouevre. A number of activities are being held through the year to support the work of VoiceAbility, including a raffle at the Parkex Gala dinner.
