MR360° News: Ian Williams
Love At First Sight
photos by GARETH COOKE / SUBZERO IMAGES Ian Williams is no stranger to winning trophies from
around the world, but even he was blown away when he first set eyes on the new trophy being awarded to the winner of the World Match Racing Tour. Te Briton, who captured his third world title last year
following a brilliant performance at the Monsoon Cup, said: “It is a magnificent trophy and I just thought how great it would be to be the first to lift it as World Match Racing Tour champion. “It felt great being the first skipper to lift the new trophy
as the World Match Racing Tour is entering a new era and it is great to be leading the way from a competitive standpoint.” Te 35-year-old added: “Tere are many fabulous trophies
in sailing with a great deal of history; trophies like the America’s Cup, the Admirals Cup and the King Edward VII Gold Cup, but there are not many special new trophies. “I hope that the World Match Racing Tour trophy will
continue for many years and create a history of its own as the sport evolves and different formats come and go.”
