Malaysia’s Jeremy Koo had mixed feelings after being
crowned at the 15th Asian Sailing Championship in Langkawi recently. While obviously delighted to have won his country’s first
gold medal in the 15th edition of the Championships, Jeremy lamented that the lack of media coverage is hampering the sport and preventing more sponsors from coming in. “Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying there is no coverage,
but more can be done. Te sport has progressed so much since I first started sailing in the optimist class many, many years ago,” said Jeremy, who is based in Hong Kong.
“Te annual Monsoon Cup has also helped create some awareness about the sport in the country but all in all, we are still lacking in terms of media coverage. Maybe with better coverage, it will be easier for the
sailors to find sponsors.” Jeremy is now hoping to raise funds to race in the Korean
Qualifier event in April, the first step towards eventually becoming the first Malaysian to race full time on the Alpari World Match Racing Tour. “I would most definitely love to race full time on the Alpari
World Match Racing Tour, but that is not cheap,” said Jeremy, who was the first Malaysian to compete in the America’s Cup as a member of Team China. “Hopefully, I can get a manager to help me as right now,
I have to assist in the marketing and scouting of sponsorships. It would be great if the government is also supportive of my activities.”
