MR360° News: Swedish Sailor of the Year
Swede success
Photo by Jaroslaw Dolota Te Alpari World Match Racing Tour is acknowledged as
one of the toughest sailing competitions around. Testament to its strength is a prestigious award won recently by one of its skippers, Johnie Berntsson (Berntsson Sailing Team). Te Swede, who placed third in the Alpari World Match
Racing Tour 2011 season behind Ian Williams (Team GAC Pindar) and Francesco Bruni (Bruni Racing), was named ‘Swedish Sailor of the Year’ by the Swedish Sailing Federation based on his outstanding performance in the 2011 Alpari World Match Racing Tour season. Berntsson accumulated 106.2 points to finish third in the
competition in his first full season as a tour card holder. It was an outstanding achievement for the debutant, who has been competing in the Alpari World Match Racing Tour since 2005. A delighted Berntsson, whose previous best finish in the Alpari World Match Racing Tour was 10th in 2008, said the
award will spur him on when the new season starts with Match Race Germany. “It feels great preparing for the coming tour with some
evidence of what we can accomplish. We know it’s going to be difficult, but now it’s realistic to start aiming for the top of the scoreboard.” Berntsson, who has two Alpari World Match Racing Tour
wins under his belt – winning the ACI Match Race Cup in 2006 and the King Edward VII Gold Cup two years later – also hopes to win his home event, the STENA Match Cup, this year. “It’s the event that we are looking forward to the most
because all our friends and sponsors will get to see us sail. A win at Marstrand is certainly something we would like to place among our career credits.” It will certainly be a Swede success if he achieves his goals.
