Transhipment conversion
China’s Jiangsu Xinrong Shipyard has recently completed an unusual project.
transhipment vessel for the Brazilian company Vale. Genoa-based Logmarin Advisors, part of the RINA group, worked with the yard in supervising the conversion of the Seamar Shipping Corporation- owned bulker into what is believed to be the world’s largest vessel of its type. It will shortly come into operation at a site in Subic Bay, the Philippines, where it will operate as a platform for the transhipment of iron ore cargoes from Vale’s 400,000dwt valemax ore carriers into capesize vessels for on carriage to markets in Asia, including China, where such vessels cannot enter port at present. Logmarin assisted Vale by devising and supervising the detailed
T
design of the conversion and by procurement assistance, selection of the Ore Fabrica terminal management, and developing operations and safety procedures. T e new cargo handling plant, the only one of its kind, consists of fi ve Liebherr cranes and a sophisticated conveyor belt/loading system which was designed and built by Bedeschi of Padova, and certifi ed by RINa. From design to delivery, Logmarin says the entire conversion took 333 days to complete. During the conversion of Ore Fabrica, which arrived at the Jiangsu
Xinrong Shipyard in August 2011, a total of 4643tonnes of new plant and steel structures were added. T e scope of work included installing the loading system and cranes, creating accommodation areas on the port side of the vessel, the creation of a starboard side generator room and installation of four new generator sets and modifi cations to the control system onboard. T e yard also had to convert the switchboard, modify and reposition winches, install a hopper fl ushing system and complete extensive cabling. T e installation of 9680kW of power gives the vessel a 5000tonnes per hour capacity, suffi cient to load a capesize vessel in 36 hours. Jiangsu Xinrong Shipyard is a joint venture between CSSC Chengxi
Shipyard, Hong Kong Huixiong Industrial and Jiangsu Changrong Steel and covers an area of 230,000m2
. Facilities include two fl oating docks
with capacities of 170,000dwt and 100,000dwt respectively, 1060m of outfi tting quay and various jib cranes with capacities up to 60tonnes. T e company is mainly engaged in shiprepair and conversion, and on average handles between 120 to 150 vessels a year. SRCT
