Shekou’s Yiu Lian Dockyards was ranked first amongst individual shiprepair yards in China last year in terms of turnover.
Dockyards (Shekou) last year carried out a total of 223 repair and conversion jobs, slightly up on the 220 recorded in 2010. Tese projects involved 56,500tonnes of steel work, 883,000m2 1.6 million m2

was RMB1.85 billion (US$293 million) an increase of 16% compared with 2010. By this measure the company claims it was the leading individual shiprepair yard in China in 2011. Last year, Yiu Lian completed three
major vessel conversion projects, all very large crude carriers (VLCCs) to very large ore carriers (VLOCs). Te scope of work for each included about 13,000tonnes of steel work and 250,000m2
of tank
coatings. In addition the yard carried out an offshore loading barge conversion by shrinking the breadth of the forward part of the barge by 21m. Tis project included about 3000tonnes of steel removal, 1500tonnes of new structural installations and reinforcement, as well as a large amount of piping work and interior and exterior coatings. Furthermore, Yiu Lian completed
extensive repairs and renewals to an FPSO, Nanhai Faxian, in 2011. In this case the main scope of the work covered mooring turret modification and repairs,
tank
coatings, piping and a great deal of work in the engine room. Recently two further conversion
projects have entered the yard. Te first is a semi-submersible drilling rig, which is to be converted into an accommodation and rig support unit with capacity for 500 people. Yiu Lian has been tasked with fabricating the accommodation modules, and installing support systems, including air conditioning, water supply and catering. Yiu Lian will also remove the existing drilling equipment, install two deck cranes and a helideck, and will carry out tank coating for all the ballast

commercial department, W S Huang: “For 2012, we think the market requirement for normal docking work will remain the same as before, but standard conversions, such as single hull to double hull tanker and VLCC to VLOC, will shrink quickly. In the future the conversion market will focus on offshore or offshore related projects, such as tankers to FPSO or FSOs. Shnezhen ports. Te yard is particularly strong in the VLCC repair sector and last year estimates that it had a market share of around 70% of all VLCCs docked and repaired in China. Te yard is also heavily engaged in containership work and in 2011 carried out repairs to a series of eight Maersk Line vessels. The Mazhou Island facility has two
VLCC size drydocks with a top capacity of more than 300,000dwt, and two floating docks with capacities of 70,000dwt and 30,000dwt respectively. Te yard also has 3400m of alongside repair berths. Although the yard is still relatively
new, last year the company invested in a new quay crane for its No. 9 berth and 10 hydro-blasting machines for tank coating work. There are no further plans for significant expansion or investment at the present time, says Huang.
