Feature 5 | LNG AND LPG CARRIERS Navantia turns in ‘best ever year’

Te Spanish shipyard group saw its turnover hit new highs in 2011, thanks largely to some extensive LNG carrier contracts.

N

avantia Shiprepairs’ Fene-Ferrol facility achieved a best ever year, with turnover up by 18% compared

to 2010, taking it past the previous best figures in 2007. One of the factors behind this performance was a high number of LNG repair and refit projects, which are one of the main specialities of the yard. According to Navantia: “Apart from featuring highly demanding technical requirement, these projects entailed a scope of work and a duration of stay way beyond the standard repairs and refits of this type of gas carrier.” As a result, while the number of LNG

carriers docking with Navantia was down, the level of turnover generated by these projects and their occupation of the yard’s drydocks were considerably higher than in previous years. In total Fene-Ferrol handled 23 LNG

projects and three LPG ships in 2011. Shell, BP Shipping and Hyproc docked three LNG vessels each, while other customers included Golar, Exmar, Gazocean, Knutsen, Hoegh LNG and Anglo Eastern. Sister yard Navantia Cadiz

also

docked four LNG and two LPG ships in the year. The Cadiz facility is a useful complement to Fene-Ferrol, acting as a back-up when high levels of occupation at the latter yard, or the vessel’s routes, require an alternative. Most of the LNG and LPG ships handled

at Navantia’s two shipyards in 2011 went through inspection, overhaul and repair works, especially in connection with their natural gas cargo tank containment systems, steam propulsion systems, HP and LP turbines, cryogenic pumps and

other cryogenic equipment. Te scope of works further covered cargo and inert gas lines, mechanical repairs of miscellaneous items of equipment and machinery, hull surface treatment and ballast tank coating and structural steel renewals. For 2012 Navantia says it expects to see

a similar volume of gas carrier business. However, it does point to current market volatility and uncertainty which can affect vessels’ maintenance and repair programs. Navantia is committed to the LNG repair business and in particular

is

investing in training to ensure its staff continues to deliver high quality services. The company is also developing new procedures aimed at providing clients with a range of solutions to any problem involving LNG or LPG vessels. SRCT
