Ancillary equipment Subsea keeps it clean

In response to the fact that an increasing number of port authorities are closing the door to hull cleaning and propeller polishing,

the Subsea Solutions

Alliance (SSA) has recently focused its R&D efforts on finding a means of performing these operations in an environmentally friendly way. After a two year research programme, costing close to US$1 million, the consortium has announced that its new underwater hull cleaning machine has been approved for use in the port of Vancouver, Canada, which had been closed to hull cleaning for several years.

The Fein fillet grinder is designed to operate in even hard to reach locations.

Subsea Solutions Alliance has developed a new underwater cleaning machine.

SSA says it has developed a method of hull

cleaning that can capture the spoils produced during the process and properly dispose of them in a way that has been approved by the regulatory authorities in Vancouver. The member companies of the Subsea Solutions Alliance - All-Sea Enterprises, Miami Diver, Parker Diving Service and Trident BV - say they plan to continue to refine the machine and deploy additional units at other key locations worldwide over the coming months. www.subseasolutions.com

Welding Compact solution for

fillet weld grinding The German machine tools manufacturer Fein has developed a fillet weld grinder specifically for difficult-to-reach areas. The flat tool head, which can be swivelled through 180degs without the need for additional tooling, can machine fillet welds on metal constructions without damaging neighbouring surfaces, even at acute angles.

16 The Fein fillet weld grinder, type KS 10-38 E,

has been developed to meet the requirements of niche metal workers, including those in the shipbuilding and repair sectors. With a head just 33mm long, the fillet weld grinder is designed to reach even very narrow fillet welds and to facilitate work on corners and offset to the side. To achieve faster working, especially with long

fillet welds, the Fein grinder features an 800W motor with permanent overload capacity. Double gear reduction delivers a very high torque and the speed range can be electronically adjusted between 1350 and 3750rpm. www.fein.com

delivered The Great Lakes Shipyard in Cleveland, Ohio, has acquired a Marine Travelift 700C mobile hoist as part of ongoing investment to enhance its shiprepair capabilities. The new 770tonne capacity hoist is claimed to be the third largest in the world, behind a 1000tonne capacity unit in Norfolk, Virginia, and an 800tonne capacity hoist in Singapore. Previously the yard was restricted to working on one
