Good year for Singapore yards Singapore remains a key focal point for LNG carrier work.


O


ne of the most important yards for LNG carrier work worldwide is Keppel Shipyard in Singapore.


Te facility in Tuas repaired a total of 26 gas carriers, including both LNG and LPG types in 2011, up from 18 in 2010, demonstrating that it remains a highly attractive location for vessels of this type. With this level of business it was probably the world’s busiest, as far as LNG repairs are concerned, last year. Te yard is also upbeat about prospects


for 2012. A spokesperson said: “We do see more LNG vessels expecting to come into the yard this year as the LNG market seems to be recovering.”


Keppel also has a sister yard, Nakilat-


Keppel Offshore & Marine, that handled 18 LNG carriers in 2011, an impressive performance for a facility that only came into existence in 2010. For the most part Keppel’s Singapore

LNG carrier Northwest Swan, which was docked for its second intermediate survey. Te vessel went through extensive overhaul of cargo and engine room pumps and motors as well as cargo and relief valves. Tis was one of a number of LNG carriers docked for the operator, Chevron Shipping, in the course of 2011. SK Sunrise was another LNG tanker visitor, which also received repair and maintenance work for LNG cargo pumps, turbine, boiler and generator. Extensive hull blasting and painting was also carried out. Jurong has also been working on a


contract from Golar LNG to convert the LNG tanker Khnanur into a FSRU, which will be renamed West Java. This FRSU project is expected to be completed before the end of 2012. The LPG tanker business is also


important for Jurong Shipyard. Notable visitors in the past year have included Crystal Mermaid, a 49,000dwt LPG carrier managed by Bernhard Schulte, which went through renewal works to her top side, double bottom and fore peak tanks. Te list of repairs on the 59,000dwt Kodaijisan, a further LPG project that the yard handled last year, included hull, machinery and electrical works, as well as inspection of the main engine bearings and underwater areas. akilat-Keppel Offshore & Marine (N-KOM) completed general repairs and drydocking for Yuyo


Steamship’s LPG carrier Yuhsho on 11 January 2012. Te large gas carrier, which transports fully refrigerated propane and butane, is the shipyard’s first LPG repair project, and arrived on 27 December 2011. Yuhsho, managed by Wilhelmsen


Shipmanagement, underwent a variety of general repairs, including blasting


and painting, an overhaul of the valves, turbochargers and cylinders within the main engine, propeller polishing, fuel injector overhauling and installation of the ballast tanks anodes. Commenting on the on-time delivery of


the yard’s first LPG carrier repair, Ivan Lim, assistant general manager of N-KOM, said: “I am very pleased with the quality of work that has been done on Yuhsho by our capable project team. With the first LPG carrier and


first VLCC docked in our yard this month as well, N-KOM can certainly look forward to growing its customer base and the variety of projects handled in the year ahead.” Te customer was evidently also delighted


with the outcome of the project. According to Jiro Watanabe of Yuyo Steamships, “I can say that we are satisfied with the quality of the repairs done and hope to be back at N-KOM for future LPG dockings and cooling works at Ras Laffan.” SRCT
