Maintenance Austal secures US military


work Te US operation of Australian fast ferry builder, Austal, has been awarded a subcontract by BAE Systems to provide structural maintenance services for Sea Fighter, a 79.9m aluminium high speed catamaran, which is used by the US Navy for research purposes. Austal currently provides in-service support to defence vessels in Australia, Oman, Trinidad and Tobago as well as the United States. Strategic Marine adds


service capacity Australian shipbuilder Strategic Marine is to expand its presence in the North West part of Western Australia by establishing a new service orientated facility in Karratha. Te new yard will offer marine services for the oil and gas sector and through-life support for all vessels operating in the region. Strategic Marine says it eventually plans to create


a global marine service network. Te focus to begin with will be on providing clients with local support for their service requirements, as well as giving support in South East Asia for long-term planned maintenance, major modifications and survey work.


Refit Pyeroy wins submarine


contract Industrial support group Pyeroy has won a contract to support the refit of the Royal Navy’s Trafalgar- class submarine HMS Torbay. The work, being undertaken at Babcock Marine’s Devonport Royal Dockyard facility, involves Pyeroy providing access scaffolding and containment systems in and around the submarine while the vessel is in dock.

Tis latest contract win follows the earlier provision


by the company of scaffolding and containment systems, along with painting services, to support the refit of the Type 23 frigate HMS Northumberland, which was also undertaken at Devonport Dockyard.


Engines Cosco tasks MAN with


retrofits MAN PrimeServ Shanghai has signed two significant maintenance contracts with COSCO, the state-owned Chinese shipping group, collectively worth around €4 million (US$5.25 million). Te first contract covers the retrofit of 32 vessels


from the COSCO bulk carrier fleet with slide-fuel valves. It also includes the retrofit of up to 13 vessels with Alpha Lubricator systems. Te second contract is with COSCO Shanghai and covers the maintenance of 24 sets of TCA88 turbochargers aboard 12 vessels. Both retrofits are expected to greatly benefit the performance of the engines onboard these vessels, MAN PrimeServ points out.


Singapore Conversion wins for


Sembawang Singapore’s Sembawang Shipyard has picked up two significant conversion projects in recent months. Te first, secured in partnership with the Indonesian firm PT Scorpa Pranedya, is a US$300 million Floating Storage Offloading (FSO) tanker conversion contract awarded by Mobil Cepu, a subsidiary of Exxon Mobil. Under the terms of the contract, Sembawang


is responsible for engineering, procurement, construction, commissioning and hook-up work on a VLCC, converting it for FSO use offshore Indonesia. Tis work is expected to take 27 months to complete. In addition Sembawang Shipyard has secured a US$140 million contract from Equinox Offshore Accommodation Limited to convert a ropax vessel to a DP2 Accommodation and Repair Vessel (ARV). To be named ARV3, the vessel arrived at the shipyard in January 2012 for the required conversion and modification works. The completed ARV3 will be a diesel-electric


DP2 specification vessel, designed and equipped to provide accommodation for up to 450 persons and workshop facilities to support and service deepwater offshore facilities. Upon completion in the fourth quarter of 2012, ARV3 will be deployed to support offshore works in Brazil for five years under a charter with Petrobras.
