UK-based Barrett Precision Tubes claims to be the first to introduce fibre laser cutting to the UK, by installing a LT Fibre system at its York plant. The company believes the system, designed and developed for cutting tubes and open profiles, will bring significant benefits to the marine and other industrial sectors. LT Fibre can cut reflective materials with faster


cutting speeds and a smoother cut surface on the finished product. Compared to traditional methods, laser processing is said to offer significant cost savings because of the reduction in the number of processes needed. Maintenance P&O Ferries installs


maintenance upgrade P&O Ferries has recently taken delivery of Marine Software’s MPM Hibernation upgrade for its ro-ro vessels European Seaway and Pride of Dover, after deciding to put them into lay-up. This upgrade will ensure that all next due calendar based jobs not outstanding at the hibernation date will be suspended, as most machinery equipment will not be running during this period. For manned vessels during hibernation, planned maintenance job lists will only include those scheduled jobs which are due for actual running machinery, along with any outstanding jobs at hibernation.

Group, has announced that its Damen Asset Management Operating System (DAMOS) has been independently approved by classification society Bureau Veritas. DAMOS is a vessel maintenance management system which has been designed to identify and categorise all the on-board systems of a vessel. Damen claims ship owners can prolong the


lifecycle of their fleet and decrease total operating costs by using the information from DAMOS. In particular, by using DAMOS, external surveys are made faster and easier, since the proof of proper maintenance is stored in the system, it states. www.damen.nl

Shell Global Solutions has granted IHC Lagersmit’s Liquidyne pump shaſt seal ‘best practice’ status for use with its cooling water pumps worldwide. Te Liquidyne water-lubricated lip seal was originally developed for dredging pumps, but has been adapted to fit cooling water pumps. Shell has approved the unit following extensive practical experience with the seal in its existing cooling water pump units. The possibility of continuously monitoring the


actual state of the Liquidyne seals enables Shell to better plan maintenance of its cooling water pumps, preventing both unnecessary maintenance and sudden pump failure.
