Jotamastic reduces surface preparation costs

Jotun claims its latest Jotamastic 90 represents a ‘step change’ in the development of surface tolerant coatings solutions.

J

otun’s Jotamastic epoxy mastic has been on the market for around 25 years and is designed for use on

existing steel surfaces without optimum surface preparation. Each product in the range is intended to meet different requirements in terms of exposure and lifetime expectations, however. The latest addition to the range is

Jotamastic 90, which Jotun claims is one of the most technologically advanced surface tolerant repair and maintenance primers on the market. A highly durable coating, Jotamastic 90 is designed to offer users a number of benefits, including ‘exceptional’ coatings resistance, shorter overcoating intervals, wide top coat compatibility and increased colour flexibility, using Jotun’s Multi Colour Industry (MCI) tinting system. According to Lasse Isaksen, product manager, anti-corrosives:

“The new

Jotamastic 90 utilises modern technology and materials to provide excellent

wetting properties, ensuring an even better surface penetration and adhesion to the substrate. The result is a very durable solution.” Designed to provide a high level of

corrosion resistance, and to be suitable for application even in severe environmental conditions, Jotamastic 90 also offers a drying time that Jotun claims is 40% less than existing, comparable products. As a result it can reduce vessel downtime and the intervals between overcoating. Jotamastic 90 is compatible with most

topcoats, including polysiloxanes and two-component acrylics. Te multicolour coating possibilities opened up by using Jotamastic 90 also improves the ability of the coating to hide the stronger colours of some existing topcoats. Better wetting and penetration further gives better intercoat adhesion, Jotun suggests. Isaksen adds: “Jotamastic 90 can be

used over most generic types of coatings and solutions can be tailored to meet

owners’ specific requirements.” Te new coating is also available as Jotamastic 90al, with aluminium flakes that offer an improved barrier to water and this version is ideally suited for coating submerged areas. Jotun argues that investment in

corrosion protection is all about calculating the cost of the coating over the lifetime of a project. The correct choice of surface preparation and coating system for maintenance and repair is the key, it says, to maximising protection and optimising return on investment. According to Isaksen: “Te Jotamastic

range offers great potential for savings through lower surface preparation costs and is one of the market’s most durable solutions compared with other surface tolerant epoxies. Investing in the right coating system today will yield future returns in terms of lower maintenance costs, longer lifetime and better protection.” SRCT

Interior coatings get eco-friendly

Valtti’s range of water-based coatings is proving popular with cruise ships especially.

lacquers for furniture to hygienic coatings for food preparation and spa areas. Around 90% of the company’s products are water-borne and have a low volatile organic compound (VOC) level. According to Sana Hashmi,

E 40

marketing and sales manager: “A massive plus-point is the fact that our products are nearly all water-based and so can be classified as environmentally friendly. However, there is no compromise on durability.”

dinburgh-based Valtti specialises in MED-approved interior products, ranging from clear

Vallti is current involved in a

significant upgrade of the cruise ship Saga Sapphire, which is underway at the Fincantieri shipyard in Palermo. The company’s products are being used in the internal renovation of both crew accommodation and public spaces. The specification requires highly durable finishes on deckhead and bulkhead areas, Hashmi points out. Valtti has also supplied an extensive

range of internal coatings to Oasis of the Seas, and various Disney Cruise liners. In the latter case products are being used to coat various electrical

fixtures and fittings. “This is a very demanding project because the number of colours required is vast and there is no real tolerance for variation,” says Hashmi, “Small volumes of each colour are needed, but with the huge number of different colours we had to adapt our production cycle to accommodate the needs of this client.” In another ongoing project Valtti

has supplied external coatings to a Caspian offshore platform for its accommodation modules. This is a fully waterborne, low VOC system, with a 25 year life expectancy. SRCT
