Navantia increases market presence Te Spanish yard is handling several significant cruise ship projects.

usiness from Royal Caribbean International has raised the profile of the Spanish shiprepair yard,


Navantia, in the cruise refit sector. Towards the end of last year its Cadiz yard handled the extensive upgrade of


the Splendour


of the Seas, in a project that involved 550 workers, including engineers, architects, interior designers, builders and technology specialists, generating a total of more than 100,000 man hours throughout a five week drydocking. While in drydock, the ship received a new


‘duck tail’, and an extension to the bridge wings, as well as regular maintenance work on the propellers, rudders and tail shaſts. Splendour of the Seas now features a variety of new dining venues and guest amenities, 124 new balconies, a host of new stateroom facilities including flat panel televisions and upgraded technology throughout the ship. Navantia Cadiz is well located for vessels


operating on the Atlantic and Caribbean regions, as well as the Mediterranean. In recent years it has handled a number of

cruise ships, including Grand Mistral, Grand Celebration and Grand Voyager as well as a significant upgrading of Norwegian Jade. All these projects were completed on time with the quality demanded by the companies, Navantia claims. The link with Royal Caribbean should further enhance the yard’s standing in the


cruise market. Four further Royal Caribbean ships are expected to dock at Navantia Cadiz in the foreseeable future, with two contracts for drydockings already booked in for later this year. Navantia also states that the yard has secured drydock bookings for two large cruise vessels belonging to other operators for completion in 2012. SRCT


Windstar upgrade for Trimline


Southampton-based Trimline has completed a prestigious upgrade on Windstar Cruises’ luxury sailing yacht Wind Surf.

and flooring in cabins and public spaces. Trimline is also carrying out initial design


process work for the two smaller yachts in the Windstar fleet, Wind Star and Wind Spirit, prior to refits due to take place this spring. Te projects require a total refurbishment of the public rooms and cabins, with the work to be undertaken as the vessels sail to Europe from the Caribbean. Trimline has engaged


McVitty Interior Consultants as its design partner for the multi-million pound task. In recent months Trimline has been


involved in another high profile project. The company was contracted to upgrade the interior of Cunard’s Queen Mary 2 with an order to replace all the soſt furnishings and carpets in the liner’s 1310 staterooms. Trimline craftsmen have been regular visitors to the ship since her inaugural voyage, carrying out interior maintenance, and the latest project to manufacture over 6000 separate items, ranks among the company’s biggest furnishings projects for Cunard, which is a regular and established customer of the UK company.
