THE FIRST wave of major new releases for 2012 has shaken up the Top 10 this week.
SQUARE ENIX brings an end to FIFA’s four-week stint at No.1 with blockbuster RPG sequel Final Fantasy XIII-2. It debuts at the top of the charts just as its predecessor did in 2010, although the original Final Fantasy XIII remains the series’ biggest-selling game in the UK in terms of week one sales.
XIII-2is followed closely by Metal Gear Solid HD Collection from KONAMI. The game reached No.2, while the publisher’s other new release – NeverDead, a decapitation- based action shooter – fails to make it into the Top 40.
NAMCO BANDAIalso enters the Top Five thanks to the release of Soul Calibur V. The franchise’s previous outing, Soul Calibur IV, debuted at No.1 when it landed on shelves in August 2008.
PS3 units made up the bulk of Final Fantasy’s sales, while Soul Caliburfared better on Xbox 360. Metal Gearsales were split almost evenly over the two formats, with Xbox 360 taking a slight edge. That’s despite (or maybe because of) the series’ long history with PlayStation.
Resident Evil: Revelationstook a hit in its second week on sale, plummeting thirteen places to No.19 – also relinquishing the No.1 spot in the 3DS chart.
Former No.1 FIFA 12 drops three places to No.4, overtaken by fellow EA title Battlefield 3. The shooter continues to hold onto a Top Five position, while rival Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 begins to slip, down five places to No.7.
The New Year fitness kick has worn off, with all fitness titles slipping down the charts.
