themoisture lock in

By Stacey Topley

The cold, windy, wet weather combined with central heating can often take its toll on skin, dry hands and cracked lips, from lack of moisture…and we wonder why some of us prefer the Summer months!

It is usually our hands and face that are left uncovered and made to confront the harshness of the Winter weather and recent studies at the International Dermal Institute showed that 59% of women rank dry, dehydrated skin as their biggest concern this season.

Therefore, clients will be looking at how to prevent these factors and care for their skin to ensure it is kept hydrated and moisturised.

“The harsh Winter weather and central heating can play havoc with our skin, stripping our natural moisture and causing the top layer of skin to dry and flake off,” explains Marissa Carter of Carter Beauty Salon, in Blackrock, Co.Dublin.

“Skin can become very dehydrated with our current climate. The cold wind has a dramatic effect on the condition of our skin so it is very important that we look after our skin and nourish it well in the coming months,” adds Audrey Heffernan of Hennessy Hair and Beauty.

It is the dramatic change in temperature from the cold air, wind and rain, which leaves the skin feeling cold, to the sudden rise in heat indoors that causes the skin to become tight and lose moisture.

“Many skins are predisposed to sensitivity so the capillaries can become easily irritated due to constantly dilating and constricting. This can also lead to broken capillaries, and rosacea is a common complaint for many,” warns Virginie Claire.

“Taking all these factors into account, it is vital to keep the skin well moisturised and protected throughout the Winter so that little water is lost from the skin even in ever changing climates,” she adds.

There are numerous ways that you can help your client protect their skin during the harsh Winter months. From facials, moisturisers, soothing balms and make-up there is something to suit each client.
