Event Preview franchisees say... What

Read real-life case studies from people who found their dream business at a franchise exhibition

He visited The British and International Exhibition at Olympia, London, and was immediately drawn to signage franchises. The combination of graphics, vinyl and technology, appealed to John so he set up some interviews with a couple of sign franchisors. John adds: “I spent about an hour with the other franchises and seven hours with FASTSIGNS. I got a really good feel for the set up, the equipment and the kind of people I’d be working with. They seemed to be a sleek, organised outfit and it just felt right.”

“The training was excellent, so I felt well-equipped to do the

job. FASTSIGNS has been very supportive, keeping me up to date with the latest technology advances and providing additional training when I need it.

John Harvey, FASTSIGNS

John Harvey, 61, and his wife Eileen Harvey, set up their FASTSIGNS franchise in Guildford in 1995 after John was made redundant from British Gas at the age of 45.

John had worked for the company since leaving school at 15 years old and for the last 10 years had been working on the B2B side as industrial and commercial sales manager in London. John explains: “The redundancy meant that we had a lump of money to invest. I thought the franchising model sounded interesting and a way to earn a decent living while keeping it under my own control.”

“My franchise business has done really well. My son, Tom, now works in the business as a sign designer, and I’m hoping that my other son, Max, may also decide to join in once he’s finished his studies.” “We have a varied customer base, with businesses of all types and sizes, and lots of repeat business. We do all the signs for Surrey Police and a large proportion of Guildford Borough Council’s signage, and both customers have been with us from the early days.”

John sums up: “I’m getting to the age where I’m considering

retiring in the next few years, so I’m hoping that the boys will take over. We’ve made a good living from the business and there’s still a lot of potential for development and growth, especially with new technologies appearing all the time.”

a major communications network that worked closely with public safety organisations. Simon, who lives in Buckinghamshire with his family, decided to set up his own venture and was considering franchising as a way to achieve this. He visited The British & International Franchise Exhibition at Olympia, London, in 2010. Simon recalls: “I found the exhibition extremely useful and was able to obtain an excellent overview of what was available. When analysing the options, I found that Auditel offered a business opportunity that would leverage my skills, provide me with flexibility and deliver the sort of returns I aim to get from my new business. I also felt the people I met had integrity and were the sort of people I could happily work with.”
