News Industry Toyota launches 2012 as dedicated ‘Year of Safety’

Toyota Material Handling UK has launched ‘Taking Care with Toyota’, a campaign featuring a number of initiatives and events designed to help reduce injury and accidents in the workplace. Statistics by the HSE show that on average, 60 people are killed every year in workplace transport accidents and a further 2,000 will suffer serious injuries. Forklift trucks are involved in nearly a quarter of these incidents. Tony Wallis, operations direc- tor commented: “Toyota has always positioned itself as a provider of safe products and ser- vices, but we believe promoting safety in the workplace goes beyond providing customers with the safest trucks, it also

Good time for 3PLs

Another period of economic hardship could have positive implications for the third party logistics (3PL) and storage industry according to Michael Potts (pictured), of 3PL specialist Flightstore.

“While it is clear that 2012 is likely to be a challenging year for many businesses, the economic climate could benefit logistics service providers.”

“When companies come under pressure to cut costs, the services offered by the 3PL sector become more attractive. By offering the chance to reduce assets 3PLs that have optimised their own busi- nesses, will be able to put for- ward a compelling business argument for outsourcing.” www.flight-store.co.uk

of the Toyota team will be attend- ing health and safety events in north, south and Midlands, per- forming demonstrations of equip- ment which help reduce strain and distributing resources to aid best practice, including the

Further resources promoting health and safety in the work- place are also being produced to provide tips for forklift safety, manual handling and the correct operation of equipment. All resources will be available online or at health and safety shows. Internally Toyota is focusing on providing its team members with information about healthier living and safety in the work- place and having dedicated areas in the depots focused on safety. PMB upgrades fleet through Barloworld

Pall-Ex network member PMB Pallet Express in Derbyshire has upgraded its materials handling fleet through Barloworld Handling after hearing reviews from the Pall-Ex network hub in Leicestershire. “We have a strict schedule and cannot afford to have a forklift breakdown during the intense periods of operation,” explained Dave Atchinson, warehouse manager for PMB Pallet Express in Ilkeston, Derbyshire.

“Every night, we load between 180 and 300 pallets onto double deck lorries for distribution through the Pall-Ex pallet network, and receive about 150 pallets back in the morning for distribution. The forklifts are critical to our entire operation.” Barloworld Handling recently supplied two new Hyster H2.0FT

Fortens diesel forklifts to the PMB depot which are similar to the models operating at the Pall- Ex hub. The Hyster trucks are said to provide reliability and a low cost of operation in intense applications where continued stop, start operations can put pressure on forklift trucks. The trucks feature the DuraMatch transmission with adjustable Auto-Deceleration (ADS) that slows the truck when the accelerator pedal is released, resulting in less brake pedal usage. The power reversal feature allows aggressive direction changes to be smooth, increasing tyre life by up to 50 per cent. “We need reliable trucks to handle our intense operation. In six months we have had no prob- lem with the equipment,” he said. www.barloworld.co.uk
