MAITLAND TOWER HO

Cocoa Beach 2012 Maitland Tower Erie Crossing Shanty C

ocoa Beach, Florida, in Janu- ary? It’s not being a “snowbird.” It’s just a chance to get together

with other like-minded modelers and see what they are doing. Besides, for a lot of us who live “up north,” January and the rest of this winter has been pretty easy. Still, Prototype Rails, held on the Atlantic side of the Sunshine State, like the slogan of Ron Jon’s surf shop just up A1A from the hotel, is “one of a kind.” It is, fortuately, a good kind. What else can you say when, two days into the event, they have to scout up more tables for the exhibit room be- cause more modelers arrived with

Coil cars get hard use, and their hoods don’t always match, as LRWN 9247 and BN 576260, both heavily weathered HO scale Red Caboose Evans cars show. Looking ahead to a warm weather weekend, Butch Eyler packed up these models for the annu- al Prototype Rails meet in Cocoa Beach.

models to show? Not bad! A few of them are shown here.

Area Prototype Modelers get-together in Richmond, California. See the site www.bayareaprototypemodelers.net for what you need to know.—BILL S.

The Big Bend Tunnel on the C&O road? No, it’s CSX somewhere in kudzu country on a por- tion of an HO scale modular railroad. Paul Newtson created a small town scene using struc- ture kits from several manufacturers, arranging them and the track to be “one of those places I have seen but I don’t know where.” The best layouts (and scenes) come from more than craftsmanship, as important as that is. They involve absorbing and understanding the spirit, the character, of a place. This is not “eastern philosophy,” and though it sounds neb- ulous most of us know what that means when applied to a model railroad. Even the small- est towns have a development pattern that is the result of geography, time, transportation, an economic environment and human decisions. Can’t see it below? Look again. The mod- ule looks right for “here” and perhaps many other places, but not for “there.” It is generic, but only to a point, and it makes a nice setting for this CSX GP40-2. Paul added a few details to a ready-to-run engine, then weathered it to show that its 1972 delivery from EMD was a long time ago; while No. 6351 is still working, its days on the front of a fast intermodal train are over. Instead, today it prowls the tracks with the last of the local freight traffic.

The Maitland Tower kit builds into a model of the tower's initial configuration and can be modified to represent a number of other Erie west end towers. Maitland also broke up the block between Glen Echo and Cold Springs on the Dayton Branch and was used by the DT&I to issue trains orders. This served to extend the tower life more than anything else and remained in service well into the Conrail years. Crossing Shanty not included
