plumbing. There is so much under this caboose that it is almost a shame to place this caboose on the track. At- hearn has modeled all of the parts that are rarely seen, and they are done very well. That detail is a nice touch, and it really makes this model stand out. The caboose rides on 50-ton trucks that come from new tooling and are some of the best trucks I have seen to date from any manufacturer. The trucks have metal pickups that
contact the axle right where the roller bearing would be. This track power is then sent up into the body of the ca- boose from the bolster area. The wheel axles protrude through the truck side- frame and are capped off with a little roller bearing end cap which rotates as the wheel rolls. How many models have you seen where the bearing caps roll? I can’t think of very many. That is one of those neat things that just makes this caboose stand out. The paint on this caboose is perfect. Separations between the different col- ors are crisp with no overspray “fuzz.” The white lettering is clean and covers completely. magnifying glass. Even the appropri- ate parts of the truck-mounted genera- tor are painted blue. One of my favorite details is the sim-
ulated window weather-stripping and window frames. The small, oblong win- dows in the bay have black edges painted around the glass, and the slid- ing windows in the bay have the silver window frame. These details are paint- ed on the model. I do this on my ca- booses and it is a tedious, somewhat frustrating process to accomplish. To see it done to a model right from the factory is just amazing. My sample came equipped with
lights and DCC, a “first” in the indus- try as far as I recall. The car’s lighting will operate on both d.c. and DCC lay- outs. A Soundtraxx decoder is factory installed and controls the lighting. The roof-mounted marker light has front and rear facing red lights. Rather than mounting lights on the sides or ends of the caboose, the Southern Pacific placed them on the roof of the car. The caboose is also equipped with in-
terior lighting. There are three circular ceiling-mounted lights inside the ca- boose that provide interior illumina- tion. The LED’s cast a warm white
