While the interior lights were on, I
started noticing all of the details in- side. The interior is painted a light blue-grey color, a color often found in- side railroad equipment. All of the ca- boose hardware is present, such as benches, lockers, chairs, partitions, etc. It is all in there and is nicely mod- eled. Inside and out, this model is one of the most highly detailed pieces I have ever had the pleasure of seeing. Well, the caboose obviously looks
glow which really looks right. It is not super bright but rather subdued, which is an effective way of lighting the interior. The caboose has a capacitor installed
in the circuit which, once fully charged, will keep the lights on for 35 to 40 sec- onds after power is removed. This is more than enough to keep the lights on over dirty track or dead spots. In DCC mode, this is a great thing because this will keep power running to the decoder and keep your functions from resetting when power is disrupted. The result is that the lights that you turned on us- ing the function keys will stay on even when the decoder loses power. In d.c. mode the interior lights will
come on after about 3.8 volts and stay lit. The caboose will know which direc- tion the train is traveling through track polarity and turn the correspond- ing marker light on. In DCC mode you have to turn on the interior lights man- ually using the function 5 key. Func- tion 0 turns the marker lights on. The direction button on your controller will change the direction of the marker light. You can also control the bright- ness of all of the lights using the CV’s in DCC mode.
great, and it is an accurate replica of its prototype, but what about opera- tion? It’s equipped with McHenry scale couplers on each end. It operated flaw- lessly as I ran the caboose around. I had pusher engines shoving the ca- boose and its train up a helix and expe- rienced no derailments. The car weighs in at three ounces and that weight helps keep its feet firmly planted on the rails. Between that and the flicker- free lighting, this is a caboose that you can just sit back and enjoy. With all the attention to detail that
we put into our motive power, it was only a matter of time before somebody made a caboose that matched that lev- el of refinement. The Athearn Genesis Southern Pacific C-50-7 bay window caboose is just that model. It would look fantastic with the Athearn Gene- sis MP15AC which was released a few years ago in SP colors. Gone are the days of watching engines rolling by and then heading for home. This ca- boose will keep you trackside until the entire train passes. Southern Pacific modelers are a fortunate bunch be- cause of the release of this model. The Southern Pacific C-50-7 bay window caboose is currently available and sells for $99.98.—SCOTT LUPIA
