F40C’s needing replacement, a fleet of aging EMD-built F40PH’s, and to cover new routes, RTA, the Chicago-area commuter railroad authority, pur- chased 27 new MPXpress MP36PH-3S locomotives from Motive Power Indus- tries in 2003-2004. (The “S” indicates that the head-end power for train light- ing and heat comes from a static invert- er taking power from the prime mover.) The 3,600-h.p. units are Metra Nos. 401-427. To say the all-new design was striking in appearance is an under- statement. They are stunning, as are Kato, U.S.A.’s new N scale models. The March, 2008, RMC has a feature

Kato knuckle couplers are body- mounted using a clever and effective method, and magnetic trip pins are pro- vided for those who wish to install them. All the wheels pick up current and are powered. The wheels have an excellent, narrow tread width and small flanges, and there was no stumbling through a variety of turnout brands. Inside the
