the capacity of the ice bunkers was half of full capacity. When delivered in 1949, the WFE swing-door cars were painted with yel- low sides and side hardware, freight car red ends and roof, black under- frame and trucks. On some cars the side sills were freight car red. The let- tering font style was called Optic, a squarish, slab-serif. The word RAILWAY was stenciled in the circular GN herald and VENTILATOR-REFRIGERATOR was stenciled below the herald. Starting in late 1951, most roofs were painted alu- minum and the single word REFRIGERA- TOR was stenciled below the herald. Starting about 1956 the lettering font style was simplified to plain block. Then, in 1967 the cars were repainted with GN’s modern “Big Sky” lettering. Color photos of the WFEX cars were published in the 4 Ways West book Great Northern Equipment, and Morn- ing Sun’s Great Northern Color Guide and Refrigerator Car Color Guide. In 1947 PC&F built 250 very similar

reefers for the Northern Pacific Rail- way, series NP 91000-91249, then an additional order of 250 came from PC&F as NP 91250-91249 in 1949. A notable difference was that the NP cars had tabs on their side sills at the ends of the underframe cross bearers. The NP cars were originally painted

with yellow sides, brown ends and roof, black side hardware, side sill tabs, un- derframe and trucks. Color photos of the NP cars were published in Morning Sun Books’ Northern Pacific Color Guide. In 1949-1950 the Southern Pacific Equipment Company built 3,000 simi- lar swing-door reefers for Pacific Fruit Express, class R-40-25, series PFE 2001-5000. A noticeable feature was the PFE cars had tabbed rather than straight side sills. This new kit from Accurail includes

a one-piece plastic body with a diago- nal panel roof, sub-sides and sub-ends. Plastic parts are included for the sides, ends, underframe, running board, four hatch covers, brake components, hand brake platform, brake rod assembly,

brake wheel, stirrup steps, Accurail couplers, truck sideframes and wheel sets. Also included are a flat metal weight and four Phillips screws for at- taching the trucks and couplers. The rivets on the sides are accurate in

size and location. The sides for the swing-door cars have placard boards lo- cated high on the left side of the doors. The grab irons and ladders are cast on the sides and ends. The sides do not in- dicate blower fans above the left truck indicating air circulation fans. On the corners of the roof above the ladders there are positions indicated for the corner grab irons. The kit does not include roof corner grab irons but they may be added by the modeler us- ing .008″ wire. The retainer valve and its piping are not included for the B- end of the car. These parts must be supplied by the modeler. Two brake wheels are included. One most accu- rately represents the Universal style. The brake wheel molded on the sprue of brake components is less accurate. The height of the swing doors is 8′-

0″, while the Official Railway Equip- ment Register (ORER) indicates a 7′-6″ or 6′-6″ tall door opening. The differ- ence is that the door opening height published in the ORER was reduced by the height of the internal floor racks. Kit assembly is quick and simple,

taking about 30 minutes. A sheet is in- cluded showing a clear, exploded parts diagram and eight assembly steps. All the plastic parts fit properly. Liquid plastic cement is used to attach the plastic parts. The sides and ends are press fitted onto the basic body, and the two end moldings are keyed such that they can only be installed on the appropriate sub-ends of the body. The flat metal weight is to be glued

to the top of the underframe with cyanoacrylate or silicone sealant. When completed, the assembled model weighs 3.5 ounces. The AB air brake components of the underframe are keyed to holes in the underframe to simplify assembly. There are two alter- nate positions for the center stirrup
