1949 with yellow sides and freight car red ends and roof. The paint is smooth and the lettering is sharp, clear and ac- curate. The underframe and trucks are unpainted black plastic. The lettering includes an accurate 7-1949 built-date, a 4-60 reweigh date, and an accurate capacity of 1,987 cubic feet. An order slip is included in the kit, enabling the modeler to obtain a set of decals from Accurail to renumber the decorated model in twelve or more road numbers. The matching decals are printed on the car color to match the decorated model. Two decal renum- bering sets are available for each kit, and they cost $4.00 per set. Two differ- ent decal sets will be available for these new steel reefers (twelve num- bers each), making 24 individual road numbers possible on each car. Accurail is initially offering the


swing door kits decorated for Great Northern/Western Fruit Express, Northern Pacific, FGE, New York Cen- tral/MDT and Chicago, Burlington & Quincy. Also available are unpainted kits, kits painted yellow and brown, kits painted orange and brown, kits painted yellow and brown with basic data, and orange and brown with basic data. Additional paint schemes will likely be offered in the future. The Northern Pacific kit is lettered


with NP’s last scheme for ice reefers, in- cluding the 60-inch diameter NORTHERN PACIFIC RAILWAY herald. The paint is smooth and the lettering is sharp, clear and accurate. The underframe is un-


painted black plastic. The lettering in- cludes an accurate 10-47 built-date, a 12-59 reweigh-date when repainted and an accurate capacity of 1,988 cubic feet. The NP cars were equipped with Preco air circulating fans, but the kit does not indicate those. The kit has straight side sills rather than the tabbed black- painted side sills of the NP prototype. Accurail has also released kits for a


similar 40-foot steel reefer with plug doors of 6′-8″ width and 7′-11″ height. In 1951 PC&F built cars with plug


door openings of 6′-0″ wide and 7′-7″ tall for Western Fruit Express in series WFEX 69100-69999. The entire num- ber series was not filled. The wider, six-foot wide door openings accommo- dated fork lift trucks to speed loading and unloading. Also in 1951, PC&F built 260 cars


with plug door openings of 6′-0″ width and 6′-6″ height for Fruit Growers Ex- press in series FHIX 40001-41260. The “HI” in the reporting marks indicated “High Insulation.” Additionally, in 1951 the Fruit Growers Express plant in Indiana Harbor, Indiana, built 250 cars with plug door openings of 6′-0″ width and 6′-11″ height for the Burlington Refrigerator Express in se- ries BREX 76000-76249. The above WFEX, FHIX, and BREX reefers had straight side sills and were equipped with Preco air circulating fans. In mid-1951 the Southern Pacific Equipment Company built 2,000 simi- lar plug door reefers for Pacific Fruit Express, class R-40-26, series PFE 8001-10000. Notable differences from the WFEX cars were that the PFE cars had tabbed rather than straight side sills and side sheets connected by dou- ble rows of rivets. Then, in 1951-1952, PC&F built 500 similar plug door reefers for the Bangor & Aroostook Railroad, series BAR 7000-7499. Again, notable differences were that the BAR cars had tabbed rather than straight side-sills and side sheets con- nected by double rows of rivets.
