Here, the extensive and well-researched captions do the work that would normal- ly be found in a running text. Conse- quently, the book starts and proceeds quickly. One finds that the roots of Muni (as the company is usually called) come from that wonderful period of reform and hope before WWI, a response to the jun- gle of big city politics that was the norm in San Francisco and elsewhere. Not sur- prisingly, after the 1906 earthquake and fire, San Francisco offered better than usual opportunities for graft and corrup- tion, but the “boodlers” (what a great word!) were eventually ousted when a re- form mayor was elected and made things stick. A new transit system, this one owned by the city, was among the re- sults, though the existing United Rail- roads and Market Street Railway hung on to compete for a time.
