catalog a custom Shay, seen with an ore train, it being a more complex mod- el beyond standard 1930’s production techniques, let alone the average O scaler’s capabilities. All track was two- rail excepting third rail for subway, m.u. (also Walthers) and overhead catenary for electric locomotives. The brochure is a testament to the strength railroads were feeling as the country was pulling out of the Great De- pression, financing such a large building with splendid indoor and outdoor ex- hibits. But, 1939 had not been a fortu- itous year. World War II began in Eu- rope after the Fair opened, with some pavilions closing in 1940.Never again would there be large O scale exhibition layouts at major expositions anywhere across the country as those at the New York World’s Fair, for HO was to become dominant after the war. Hungerford repeated his outdoor spectacle of prototype railroad evolution

at the 1948 “Wheels A Rolling” pageant on the shores of Lake Michigan at the Chicago Railroad Fair, which celebrated the railroads’ involvement in the open- ing of the West with a similar cast of historic locomotives, singers, dancers and actors, but with the addition of Burlington’s 1934 Denver Zephyr and an EMD E7 for the closing scene. I do not have enough information to

know the entire scope of the Chicago Railroad Fair, or if it included an oper- ating train layout of any scale. Can a reader fill in this gap? That event was an industry celebrating 100 years of American railroading, rather than a large international exposition with world participation and exposure. It was a new era, a new economy, a

new way of regarding rail travel. The prototype and O scale railroad exhibits at the 1939-1940 New York World’s Fair were the last big splurge before the post-war realities set in.
