1970’s. These cabooses rolled on 50-ton trucks and were nearly identical to pre- vious Southern Pacific bay window ca- boose orders. In fact, the “-7” in C-50-7 indicates that this was the 7th order of this particular caboose. I guess you could say that the Southern Pacific was satisfied with this caboose as they ran right until the end of the caboose era. Athearn has introduced this caboose

Southern Pacific C-50-7 caboose: HO scale Mfd. by Athearn Trains, 1600 Forbes

Way, Suite 120, Long Beach, CA 90810; www.athearn.com. I often think about how great train watching must have been during the era of the caboose. The intense sound of the motive power as it nears and then blows by at speed, the parade of different freight cars and then, right at the end of the train, that colorful little caboose with a friendly wave from the crew as it passes by. Today you can barely hear the engines since they are muffled, the doublestack cars all look alike, and the little blinking red light has replaced the friendly wave from the crew on the hind end. Fortunately, modeling railroading doesn’t have to reflect the current state of the railroad industry. In fact, Athearn has intro- duced a caboose that really captures the feel of the long-gone caboose. The Athearn Genesis-series South-

ern Pacific C-50-7 bay window caboose is one of those models that makes you want to stick around while all of the freight cars pass by just so you can see it roll by. The prototype was built by International Car Company in the late

in the “Genesis” line. Knowing how nice the Genesis series locomotives that Athearn produces are, I had high expectations right off the bat. As soon as I opened the box and started looking over the model, I was immediately “wowed.” All of the Southern Pacific details were present. This isn’t a model of some other caboose that was put into Southern Pacific paint. No, this is a Southern Pacific C-50-7 caboose. Let’s start at the top. All of the

rooftop detail that the SP was known for was present. Every grab iron that should be there is there, and is sepa- rately applied, as well. The grab irons are not made from oversized pieces of wire either. They are very fine and look to be in proportion with the model. Speaking of proportions, this model also is correct in all major dimensions. Every part model is correctly sized. One of the outstanding features is

the etched parts. The window screens are finely-etched and nicely applied. One of my pet peeves is when manufac- turers attach etched parts and get globs of glue all over the model. This is not the case here. I saw no glue any- where. The end platforms and steps also have etched metal walkways, see- through and incredible-looking. The coupler cut levers are also nicely de- tailed. They extend from the bottom of the coupler pocket to the bracket next to the step. This rod is somewhat flexi- ble and actually very sturdy. Scrutinizing the underside of the ca-

boose, I saw something I didn’t expect to see on the model, a fully detailed bottom showing all brake rigging and
