Food for thought
Thought-provoking material was on the menu for delegates at the latest ECA South East region branch meeting. The well-attended business afternoon took place
at the Marriott Tudor Park at Maidstone in Kent in November, and both the ECA president, Alun Pearson, and group chief executive offi cer, Steve Bratt, were on hand to talk to the delegates.
Frank Elliott Trophy winner
It was a proud moment for apprentice James Norman of Imtech G&H Ltd as he received the Frank Elliott trophy for 2011.
The trophy commemorates the late Frank Elliott, who was East Midlands regional manager from 1981 to 1996, and is awarded to the winning fi rst-year electrical apprentice whose employer is a member of the East Midlands Employers Training Forum. Nominations were received from colleges across the region, supported with employer references. Nominees must have achieved at least a credit level
in the units completed in the City & Guilds 2330 fi rst year and must also demonstrate top-class interpersonal skills, practical ability and high levels of effort. Following a panel interview in October, Norman emerged as the winner and was presented with the engraved cup, a plaque and a cheque for £300 by ECA president Alun Pearson at the East Midlands Business conference in November.
Wired in
The ECA’s Maidstone & East Kent Branch organised a comprehensive and informative presentation about Amendment One to the 17th edition of the IEE Wiring Regulations at an event held at the Village Hotel, Castle View, near Maidstone.
The event, which took place in mid-
November, proved very popular, with some 74 ECA members attending. A hot buffet supper was provided
and there was a chance to network and socialise before an additional presentation given by ECA lead assessor, Graeme Wool, on the new Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR).
The technical presentations offered information about opportunities for contractors in new technologies and energy effi ciency. Graham Reynolds is the South East’s fi rst-ever winner of the JTL National Apprentice of the Year, and his achievements were celebrated in an awards section, which also included the Regional Apprentice and Golden Decade of Sport Awards presentations.
Outgoing regional
chairman, Malcolm Crofts, was presented with an ECA Local Service Award by the ECA president, Alun Pearson, in recognition of his service to the ECA South East region.
Bird’s eye view of the Seagulls’ new home
Members of the ECA Brighton, Hove & District Branch were given a guided tour of the stunning new home of Brighton & Hove Albion Football Club.
After admiring the views from the magnifi cent Falmer-
based sports arena, the 32 delegates were able to sit in the dug-out at the American Express Community Stadium, and visited the changing rooms, physiotherapy suites, the state-of-the-art media centre and hospitality suites. After the tour, the branch members met in Dick’s Bar for refreshments.

Sowing the seeds for success
Hessle Rangers Football Club, in the north-east region, has taken full advantage of the ECA Golden Decade of Sport sponsorship fund.
The club, which has recently achieved the highest award possible for a grassroots club – becoming an FA Charter Standard Community Club – runs 23 teams across all ages, gender and abilities. One programme that the club organises is First Touch football, catering for four-to-seven-year-olds. This concentrates on coaching four basic skills: ability, balance,
coordination and speed. The session attracts both boys and girls and, as the coach explained, the skills involved are suitable for all sports activities. The club prides itself on offering coaching and playing opportunities for all ages and all abilities, from under-seven to open-age groups categories. It also collaborates with local schools to offer both curriculum-time coaching and after-school activities.
