GET THE RIGHT IMAGE WITH A DUROFIX INSPECTION CAMERA

The ECA’s online store is open for business – and here, in our regular focus on products and deals, Neil Hayden highlights Durofix’s 6V AA battery powered inspection camera

I

nspection cameras have been around for a number of years, and as a tool they wouldn’t necessarily be something you use everyday. But when you do need one, they pay for themselves – saving time, effort and

money. A typical scenario: you are working in an old house

that, years ago, appears to have had an owner who was a keen DIYer. Bathrooms were moved, new plastic pipes installed – and all without any building regulations being consulted. Now you, the sparky on site, have to put a large hole through a wall to get your cable through – but you are unsure where it is safe to drill… In this instance, it would be ideal to know what you are

about to drill through, in case it’s a water pipe or, worse still, a gas pipe. Here is where a tiny 8mm inspection camera comes in. You start by drilling an 8mm hole at low speed, repeatedly removing the drill and using the camera to look down the hole to inspect what is ahead. The camera has its own five-level LED lights that really do illuminate the situation. Once the pilot hole is fully drilled, a single pass of the camera can alert you to pipes close to your pilot hole. Cables snagged above ceilings can be looked at, using

the camera’s two-metre umbilical lead, and under-floor hazards can be spotted quickly and easily before your client’s decor is ruined and you have a lot of cost and explaining to do! It used to be the case, some years ago, that inspection

cameras cost many hundreds or even thousands of pounds and were the preserve of specialists offering their services. But nowadays cameras are much more affordable, and users can see a quicker return on their investment. There are a number of variants around, all offering different features and benefits. And this brings us to the camera that we’re highlighting here…
