Fit for purpose Designer M&E Services UK has a vast amount of experience in working with modular systems and has installed them in many of its previous projects. Nick Baish explains: ‘Having previously used modular wiring systems in high profile jobs such as Wembley Stadium and Royal London Hospital, we invited Apex Wiring Solutions to put together and present a proposal for the IBC.’ Dave Lewis, managing director of Apex Wiring Solutions,


adds: ‘Our proposal was accepted and we started work with Designer M&E Services UK in August 2011 with a view to achieving completion and hand over by the end of March 2012. This is an enormous undertaking and one that only a company with our experience and expertise is able to fulfil.’ Apex is a market leader in the manufacture of modular systems, with a leading position in the UK healthcare market for electrical wiring products, supplying systems to more than 50 PFI and ProCure21 schemes. It also provided the London 2012 Olympic Village apartments with a fully pluggable modular scheme.

Facts and figures about the Main Media Complex: n It took just 10 weeks to build the 4,500 tonne steel structure of the IBC, which is 275m long, 104m wide and 21m tall. That’s big enough to house five jumbo jets placed wing-tip to wing-tip.


n The IBC was the fifth building to be completed on the Olympic Park.


n There is a 200m long ‘high street’ with banks, newsagents, travel agents and a post office, plus a 12,000m2


catering village that will serve 50,000 meals per day. n It includes around 42,000m2 of functional space over


two double-storey floors, with a temporary gantry running along the building for technical equipment.


n All international images will be produced and distributed in HD format and broadcasting in 3D will be supported.
