FEATURE WHAT'S HOT 2012
Boutcher highlights Costa Rica and less- developed Panama as offering good- value sales potential in 2012. But he says Brazil's strong economy has made the country expensive. Costa Rica gets the thumbs up from other operators, while Argentina gets the nod from some.
Tourism Talk MANUEL DIAZ CEBRIAN
regional director, Europe, Mexico Tourism Board “We are closing 2011
with great numbers; it will end up being a fantastic year – the best since 2000 and better than 2008, when we had 310,000 UK visitors. This year we will end up around 330,000, which is about 11 per cent up on 2010. “Next year we are going to have
more capacity with Virgin flying into Cancun from June three times a week. We have a new campaign which will focus on luxury and Mayan culture. “For 2012, I would say we can
probably get 10 per cent growth, so we can get close to 350,000-370,000. It could be a record year because we have
more capacity. Thomas Cook and TUI have said their winter and summer sales are higher than previous years.”

ASIA Despite the heavy publicity about
Thailand’s floods, which Funway’s Melissa Tillings says have had limited effect on tourist areas, she expects demand will bounce back now that it is out of the news. India and Vietnam are the other hot
tips from operators for 2012. Vietnam Airlines’ new direct service from Gatwick this winter is a huge spur. The twice-weekly service to Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City is being featured by a number of operators. The service connects to 23 destinations in Vietnam.
Tourism Talk NGUYEN THI THANH HUONG, vice-director, Vietnam National Administration of Tourism
“Last year we had about five million international visitors. This year we expect to have about 5.7 million and 6.5 million in 2012. “Normally we have about 10 per cent
increase in visitors from the UK every year. We think with the direct flights it will be about a 15-17 per cent increase in 2012. We have three main tourism products – beaches and islands, cultural- based tourism and eco-based tourism.
For British tourists, we are concentrating on promoting beach and island tourism. The British people come for the beaches. “Ha Long Bay is very famous but we
would like to attract widespread tourism. There are new resorts along the coast. “At the moment Vietnam is unknown
to the British tourists. We have to provide more information to potential tourists to boost their eagerness to go to Vietnam, and also to the travel agents to help them understand what Vietnam is. In 2012 we will organise a Viettnam Cultural Week in London. "We will have activities like
workshops, cultural performances, and meetings with the trade and journalists. “We submitted a proposal for
overseas tourist offices to the government a long time ago but we have not had this approved yet. "Maybe in the future we will have
representative offices in South Korea and Japan, but for the near future Vietnam Airlines can help us to promote Vietnam.”
