UP CLOSE & PERSONAL BY STEVE HARTRIDGE

In a scene reminiscent of something I had witnessed years earlier in Acapulco, Mexico, men young and old flung themselves from the ramparts of Galle Fort, briefly assuming the position of a swallow in flight before splashing into the swirling Indian Ocean below. After what seemed just a split second

or so later, the cliff divers were back at the top of the fort hoping their flights of fancy had impressed tourists enough for them to part with a few rupees. Galle is a town where the sights, sounds and colours come thick and fast. As we walked around its narrow streets,

resisting the tempting aromas coming from dozens of street vendors, grey parakeets flew overhead while across distant terracotta rooftops a dozen or so playful monkeys skipped and jumped. And that's Sri Lanka: a destination that

fully engages your senses, challenges your perceptions and delivers on your expectations – and then some.
