and once everything is approved, I do the fi- nal work.” Inspired by the late Ted Rose — “I study his work closely to learn how he in- troduced drama into his paintings, especial- ly with the use of light.” — he, too, seeks to capture the drama of railroading. While he’s known primarily for his por-

traits of the Pennsylvania Railroad, Lerro has portrayed other roads from across America, including the Baltimore & Ohio, Norfolk & Western, Reading, Conrail, and Amtrak. He’s also done a bit of portraiture along with some maritime work. “I only turn down assignments that involve an unwork- able deadline.” In other words, “Hustle.” To see the result, go to www.lerro produc- tions.com. —JAMES D. In Search of Beer You’ll notice in the story of the Canadian ad- venture that I took with George Pitarys in August 2011 (page 32) that we started seek- ing one of the two VIA Rail Canada F40s painted in the Coors Light “Silver Bullet” scheme (6408 and 6445). George had taken a photo of one of the two units on a previous trip and showed it to me, and I was immedi- ately obsessed with trying to find one. It seemed they were often assigned to the cor- ridor trains between Toronto and Windsor that had stainless steel Budd-built cars — what’s a better combination than a silver en- gine with silver cars? Every morning before the short lines

started their days’ work we’d head over to the Canadian National main line in search of the silver units. And every evening our ritual was standing by the CN once again as the sun set, hoping for the beer units.

One day we were standing at the inter-

change between the Ontario Southland and Canadian Pacific in Ingersoll, Ontario, when we heard a horn on the CN, not more than a couple of hundred yards away but ob- scured by trees. We could tell from the sound that the train was short. “What was that?” we wondered. About four days into the week-long trip,

we finally noticed an oddity in the VIA cor- ridor timetable — one of the trains appeared “out of sequence,” showing up after the right-at-sunset train but in reality running a couple of hours in front of it. That must have been what we heard in the trees. As time permitted we scooted over to the CN to look for this train as well. Every day we came up empty. Fast forward to a couple of weeks after

the trip. George was perusing the Canadian version of Railpictures (www.railpictures .ca) and came across a shot of one of the Sil- ver Bullet engines. In Ingersoll. On the day we were in Ingersoll. Yup, we heard one of the Coors units, but didn’t see it. Despite the “dry” trip, it was very enjoy-

able. George can plan quite the itinerary, and as an ex-dispatcher he has an amazing number of contacts scattered all over New England and Canada. The “George & Steve Adventure” is definitely a highlight of my year, and I hope you enjoy reading our ongo- ing trials and tribulations. Meanwhile, I’ll be heading for Toronto sometime next spring for a streetcar char- ter. You know what’s going to be high on my “hit list” of things to seek out while I’m north of the border.
