Fogg in the Cockpit by Richard and Janet Fogg tells the story of well-known railroad artist Howard Fogg’s career as a captain in the U.S. 8th Air Force 359th Fighter Group during World War II. The story is based up- on a detailed diary which Fogg maintained to record his combat experiences while flying P- 47 Thunderbolts and P-51 Lightnings on combat missions over Europe. His experi- ences ranged from meeting Laurence Olivier and Janet Leigh in London to escorting B- 17s as they dropped supplies to French free- dom fighters. The diary is supplemented by the authors and with material from the Chaplain’s Informal Monthly Reports of Morale and the Monthly Reports of the 359th Group Historian. Also included are a selec- tion of Fogg’s editorial cartoons, nine prelim- inary pencil sketches of railroad paintings, and 31 full-color reproductions of Fogg art-
work, and all but one are rail subjects. This 6″×9″ hardcover retails for $32.95 plus $6.00 shipping from Casemate Publishers, 908 Darby Rd., Havertown, PA 19083; www.
casematepublishing.com/title.php?isbn= 978161 2000046; PA residents add sales tax. The book is also available from
Amazon.com as either a hardcover or an ebook. Ulster County Railroads by Stephen
Ladin and Glendon Moffett is a recent re- lease in the Arcadia Publishing Images of Rail series. The book covers the five major railroads which operated in that upstate New York county including the Central New England (New Haven), Ontario & Western, Ulster & Delaware (New York Central), West Shore (NYC) and Walkill Valley (NYC), as well as the New Paltz, Highland & Poughkeepsie trolley. Typical of Arcadia books, it’s packed with well-reproduced vin- tage photography. Notable subjects include views of Brooks Crossing, where the NPH&P crossed the CNE on a spindly tres- tle and bridge; construction views of bridges including the West Shore viaduct over Ron- dout Creek near Kingston and the Walkill Valley’s Rosendale bridge over the Walkill River and Delaware & Hudson Canal; and some excellent views of the Ulster & Delaware shops and the D&H Canal facili- ties along Rondout Creek at Kingston. The book also includes many fine views of early locomotives and cars along with a good vari- ety of long-gone stations and other struc- tures. This 6¹/₂″×9¹/₄″ softcover retails for $21.99 plus $6.00 shipping from the Trolley Museum of New York, 89 East Strand, P.O. Box 2291, Kingston, NY 12402. NY res- idents add sales tax.
