MAITLAND TOWER HO

Authority points out that an earthquake fault exists under it. Thanks to John Allen Lee for information on the quandary. When NEW YORK CITY TRANSIT in- troduced the 30-day Metrocard in 1998, it cost $63. By the summer of 2010 the price had risen to $104, in part caused by the re- luctance of the state of New York to provide financial help as it has done in the past. Thanks to Doug Barron for the news. Bad news from Ohio – the OHIO RAIL-

Maitland Tower Erie Crossing Shanty

The Maitland Tower kit builds into a model of the tower's initial configuration and can be modified to represent a number of other Erie west end towers. Maitland also broke up the block between Glen Echo and Cold Springs on the Dayton Branch and was used by the DT&I to issue trains orders. This served to extend the tower life more than anything else and remained in service well into the Conrail years. Crossing Shanty not included

WAY MUSEUM was closed over the sum- mer of 2010 due to an electrical mishap. Lo- cated along Proprietors Road just west of State Route 161, the museum is in Worthing- ton, close to Columbus. Although a cleanup effort was mounted recently to overcome its rundown condition, the days of the Ohio Railway Museum may be numbered because of the lack of volunteers and interest. Many thanks to Rick Hilberg for the sad news. Per- haps there is an angel or angels somewhere. The AirportLink is a 2.4-mile addition to

the all elevated 22.6-mile MIAMI METRO- RAIL service that operates in the downtown Miami area and extends south toward Homestead. The AirportLink is a major ef- fort to improve transportation on a multi- modal basis and will serve the Miami Inter- modal Center to the east, close to the Miami International Airport. The center will bring together the Metrorail rapid transit line and local and intercity bus service, as well as car rental service. Eventually Amtrak may also serve the center. This seems to be the type of facility that is needed elsewhere in the U.S. The AirportLink is expected to be open in 2012. By the way, the intermodal center will be joined to the airport by a people

mover. Thanks to Fred Cole and Carl Edd for the information. From the Los Angeles region, Frank

Bauer writes that construction on the EX- POSITION LIGHT RAIL LINE will con- tinue. The controversy over the street-level crossing near Dorsey High School has been solved by the California Public Utilities Commission, which has given the go ahead. The 8.6-mile Exposition line links down- town Los Angeles with Culver City. The environmental Impact statement has

been finished for the San Francisco project to extend the historic streetcar service from Fisherman’s Wharf to the San Francisco Na- tional Maritime Historical Park and Golden Gate National Recreation Area’s Fort Mason Center. The HISTORIC F LINE on Market Street and the Embarcadero now terminates at Jones and Beach streets near the wharf. The extension would operate three blocks west of the present terminal to national his- torical park and then through the Fort Ma- son railroad tunnel to Fort Mason. Exact de- tails of the expansion will be released later. Thanks to Douglas I. Duncan for the news. LOS ANGELES Mayor Antonio Vil- laraigosa suggested that the Federal Tran- sit Administration might loan money to L.A. so that several transit projects could be com- pleted in 10 years rather 30 years. It would be repaid from a transit tax approved by vot- ers in 2009. FTA likes the idea and a loan of $546 million will be forthcoming to help pay for the light rail transit line to be construct- ed in the Crenshaw district. It will connect with Los Angeles International Airport. Thanks to Martin Gombert, Frank Bauer, and John Allen Lee.

Get inspired.
