“Guardians of the Legacy” Oil on Canvas, 20” x 24”, 2009

Were it not for the railroads, we would have no national parks. This work pro- claims that this historic relationship, one between the passenger train, the National Park Service, and our protected lands, remains relevant to safeguarding our legacy in the 21st century. The eastbound Empire Builder is shown along the middle fork of the Flathead River just east of Belton, Montana. A Patrol Ranger surveys the scene, including the sun-lit flanks of Mount St. Nicholas.

“Morning Arrive” Pastel, 16” x 23”, 2011

Dawn is an exciting time of day to be out and about. Add to that general experience the rumble and roar of a train or two, headlights ablaze, trailing car lights, glow- ing signal lights, and the moment is about complete. The Capitol Corridor services and Coast Starlight are the two trains I see running through the local stations. The power varies, of course, but I like the more modern designs. The blunt-front control cabs add contrast by providing a darker background for the headlights, which in turn creates a more dramatic effect. My pulse always quickens as I spot train head- lights in the distance. You know the feel- ing, I’m sure.
