HERE AT CARSTENS PUBLICATIONS we are happy to announce the introduction of the new Carstens Hobby Magazines app for the iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch. The app itself is free, and the December 2011 of R&R is available through the app as a free download. You’ll notice that our digital edi- tion also has embedded video, so you’ll be able to view scenes from last month’s fea- tures including steam on East Broad Top and Cumbres & Toltec Scenic, as well as vin- tage diesels from the Lake Superior Rail- road Museum. Commencing with this issue (January

2012) you’ll be able to subscribe to the iPad edition of R&R or purchase individual copies. We’ll soon be rolling out a digital ver- sion that can be viewed on non-Apple de- vices such as your laptop or desktop com- puter. We’ll also be announcing special rates for those who want to receive both the digi- tal and paper version each month. Stop by the Apple app store and download

the Carstens Hobby Magazines app and the December 2011 R&R and let us know what you think!

This Month’s Artists Jim Porterfield rounded up twelve diverse artists to contribute to our Portraits of Am- trak feature (page 42), and we thought you might like a little more information on each, including where you can see more of their works. Our 12 artists are: Gil Bennett: a graduate of the Art De- partment at the University of Utah, has been a professional illustrator since 1984. Mentored by Howard Fogg and Ted Rose, Bennett refers to himself as an “artistrator,” his term for the blend of the artistic expres- sion and technical detail one finds in his work. (www.gilbennett.com; 801/766-0198; gil@gilbennett.com) Stewart Buck: After graduating from Iowa State University in the spring of 1973,

Buck rode Amtrak to California to investi- gate an art graduate school he was interest- ed in attending. Crew Change at Dawn com- memorates that trip, he says, “probably the most memorable because it came at such a pivotal time in my life.” (www.stewart buck.com) Alex Craghead: A graduate of Maryl-

hurst University, with a degree in Commu- nications, Craghead, whose writing, photog- raphy and art has appeared in a number of publications (including his DEPARTURES col- umn in R&R), is a self-taught watercolorist from Portland, Ore. He counts Edward Hop- per and the Japanese block-print artist Ha- sui Kawase as influences on his typical style. (http://alexcraghead.com) Mike Danneman: Pursuing a lifelong in-

terest in trains and art, Danneman worked as an illustrator for Model Railroader and as Art Director for Trains before beginning a freelance career in railroad art and photog- raphy in 1995. The author of seven books, he and his wife Katie, also an artist, live in Ar- vada, Colorado. (MikeDanneman@gmail.com; www.sandcastlearts.com/) Mark Desobeau: Living in Utah, and a locomotive engineer for the Union Pacific, Desobeau strives for an artistic view of the industrial railroad image, mixing it with the natural beauty of the land and surroundings to create streamlined passenger trains cut- ting through the mountains, the nation’s freight rolling along a river, or a steam loco- motive just getting underway. (www.artist oftherails.com; 801/394-4962; artistoftherails@ earthlink.net) Brad Faegre: As a Pastel Society of America Master Pastelist, Faegre has won numerous awards, and his art has appeared in national and international magazines and books. His railroad subjects brought in- vitations to exhibit at the California State Railroad Museum, Penn State University and in an Amtrak-sponsored exhibit at the
