WORK IS CONTINUING ON THE replace- ment of the 118-year-old double track BNSF Railway bridge across the Mississippi River at Burlington, Iowa. The 2002-foot long former Chicago, Burlington & Quincy bridge on the Ot- tumwa Subdivision is crossed by approximately 30 BNSF freights and Amtrak’s California Zephyr each day. The first phase of the 2¹/₂-year project, which began in October 2009, was to re- place the center pivot swing span, built in 1893, with a vertical lift bridge to double the width of the navigation channel. The new lift span was assembled on barges downstream and was floated into place in December 2010. Prior to the installation of the new lift span, one fixed
