WORK IS CONTINUING ON THE replace- ment of the 118-year-old double track BNSF Railway bridge across the Mississippi River at Burlington, Iowa. The 2002-foot long former Chicago, Burlington & Quincy bridge on the Ot- tumwa Subdivision is crossed by approximately 30 BNSF freights and Amtrak’s California Zephyr each day. The first phase of the 2¹/₂-year project, which began in October 2009, was to re- place the center pivot swing span, built in 1893, with a vertical lift bridge to double the width of the navigation channel.
