It’s a pity that Joel Jensen was born too late to experi- ence regular service steam. This
book
demonstrates that Jensen’s work captures the essence of
contemporary steam railroading and the people who make it happen on a level with past masters of the art such as Hastings, Link, Plowden, and Shaughnessy in a time long gone. While today’s steam operations might be labeled “recreational” railroading, the sights are just as majestic, compelling, and gritty, and the work is just as hard and dirty, as it was six decades ago. The work to- day might even be more difficult than it was in the past, as many steam do not have ac- cess to the equipment and infrastructure that existed when steam railroading was an everyday occurrence. As John Gruber notes in his essays,
Jensen is a photographer who’s interested in the visual potential of railroads, rather than a railfan who is a photographer of rail- road equipment. That’s a huge distinction.
