"Winter Meet at Washington’s Union Station" Watercolor, 12” x 22”, 2011

This work is set in the mid-1970s. The two Amtrak locomotives — an older E-unit and newer SDP40F — represent what Amtrak was employing at the time. These are the types I would ride behind on short trips be- tween Aurora and Kewanee, Illinois. I en- joy painting scenes I recall as a child, or creating fictitious scenes that I may have missed because of my age. So I create an image such as this depiction of Washing- ton Union Station in winter as I might have seen it. It represents a time when Amtrak still had a variety of locomotives, equip- ment and color schemes, and served great urban train stations.

Mike Danneman “Amtrak’s Chicago”

Acrylic on Canvas Board, 18” x 24”, 1996

When Amtrak engineer Craig Willett com- missioned me to do this painting for him in 1996, he had certain subjects that he wanted illustrated. One of his favorite Am- trak locomotives to run was F40PH no. 365, so that had to be “front and center,” even with its recently added ditch lights and relocated horn. He also wanted the newcomers to Amtrak’s fleet, the General Electric P32BWH and P40B. But time marches on. The P32s are now in a differ- ent paint scheme, the Genesis P40B’s are mostly retired, and the F40PH’s are now completely gone from Amtrak's stable. And the Chicago skyline has grown too.
